Cash Incentive
The scheme is designed to help homeowners improve the energy efficiency of their heating and hot water systems by receiving £400.00 towards the supply-and-fit of a brand new boiler when scrapping their old one.
If you have an old boiler you may qualify. The government is looking at replacing those classed as G-rated. There are an estimated 4.5 million of these across the UK. Check to see if your boiler was fitted more than 15 years ago. Has it got a permanent pilot light? If you are under 60, the boiler needs to be in working order and the main source of heat for the home. Those over 60 can apply for the scheme whether the boiler works or not. However, it still needs to be the main boiler used to heat the home. Visit the Energy Savings Trust to find out more.
Industry Boost
The heating sector, including boiler manufacturers and plumbers, could benefit by as much as £300 million. The Government will also benefit due to revenue generated from VAT.
Funding
It is estimated that there are enough funds in the scheme to help 125, 000 homes. These households could make savings of around £235.00 a year on gas bills.
Energy Efficient
The government estimates that inefficient gas boilers contribute around 60% of the carbon emissions from UK households. That means the scheme could cut carbon emissions by up 1.26 tonnes per home per year. It is also hoped the scheme will provide a much needed boost to the economy, securing thousands of jobs. Visit the Department of Energy and Climate Change to find out more.

My boiler is old, but as a single guy who is working and not entitled to benefits, can I still qualify

Any one with a boiler that is G rated is entitled to this grant, for further information look on the Energy Saving Trusts web site to see more info on which boilers are G-rated.

This is all well and good, but £400. I last had a quote for £3000 to change my back boiler to a combi. The £400 is negligable.

Typical the over 60's get everything for nothing as per usual where the workers have to pay!

What a thoughtless comment.
Most people of 60+ are retired, on a fixed income.
They also have all the appliances running out at the same time usually.
The amount offered here may seem unfair to you the worker, but I can tell you, there is a big difference between it and the final bill. Not just the boiler out of date but all the pipework is out of date too.
Just bear a thought for the over 60's before you go off on one.

Hi Celia, from a grumpy old grandad, I do hope you reach 60 then you will know what its like, most of us have worked all our lives so keep on working it will be your turn sooner than you think.

What an arsehole you are, I worked for 45 years none stop and paid my national insurance for all those years, so I am not being given anything, I am getting a little back for all the interest the government made from my contributions over the years.
Sonn, very soon you will be old yourself

as a over 60 person who has worked at times 3 jobs to make ends meet, i take exception to the remark that Celia made, who do you think paid for your grandparents benefits. as you see from the remarks it was the wrong thing to write.

the over 60s don't always get ever thing for nothing, my hubby is 69 and he has worked on a building for the last 40 of them, and he has paid in to the coverment all is working life, i'm still working as well and still paying in, so this £400 will cover nothing, i have just had a new boiler put in and it cost us £3,000. Because hes still working he get's nothing for free not like he would if was on benefits, then everything would be free.

Not withstanding that we also pay tax and have done at a higher rate for 40+ years. Get more quotes.
Mal said 5:45AM on 1-18-2010
I worked all my life; paid tax and paid NI. In today's terms, I estimate I've paid over £1million into the government's coffers over the years. A little (very little) coming in my direction is the least I expect and the least I've earned.

You will be over 60 one day and would like to see how you manage on a state pension. If your parents are over 60 they must be proud of you

what a hatefull & selfish person you must be, makeing comments like that, you have to realise that unlike alot of todays youth,if we did not work we recieved very little or NO benifits & what was recieved was means tested (usualy told to sell items untill you had practicaly nothing) plus have YOU tried to live on a basic pension.I have a solid fuel boiler ,& to have gas fitted was quoted £17,600.00 nearest gas pipe 600 yards away + cost of boiler & fitting.so i am not entitled either,as coal is now £195:00 per ton (lasts approx 6 weeks) i do not think you have anything to gripe about, before making that type of comment in futcher check with family members (of pension age) as to their feelings on the subject
Liz said 11:15AM on 1-24-2010
Don't you think that the over 60's may have already paid there dues and demands in tax and NI over their working life. THey get little enough in pension without you begrudging them support to change their boiler. How selfish of you
