Royal Wedding
Canadians, like hundreds of millions across the world, also caught Royal Wedding fever. The events at Westminster Abbey were popular viewing despite events starting early in the morning here in North America. The royal couple's visit to Canada in the summer only added to the country's affection for Will and Kate.
Amy Winehouse
The music world was shocked and saddened when Amy Winehouse was found dead at her Camden flat on 23 July - aged just 27. Despite having only released two albums, the troubled star was hugely influential and considered one of the most exciting female vocalists in the world. After much speculation, a coroner ruled that alcohol poisoning was the cause of her death.

Face in Tumour
A doctor in Kingston, Ontario got a surprise when he examined an x-ray of a patient's cancer. Doctor Naji Touma spotted what appeared to be a face in a patient's testicular tumour. "It was very ghoulish, like a man screaming in pain", the doctor said. Doctors debated if the face meant anything but decided it was merely a visual coincidence.
A Look Back At 2011
In 2011 the Middle East was hit with riots over tyranny, in Greece over austerity and in Toronto over the G20 and globalization. Vancouver had a riot of a different kind - a hockey riot. After the Vancouver Canucks lost game seven of the Stanley Cup finals to the Boston Bruins, a public disturbance broke out in the city's downtown core.
An estimated 100,000 people had crowded city streets to watch the game on giant TV screens and after the loss the crowd got out of control. Cars were torched, windows smashed and more than 100 arrests were made. Amid the bad publicity for the city one inspiring story from the riot made headlines worldwide - the 'kissing couple'. Scott Jones attempted to comfort his girlfriend Alex Thomas with a kiss after she had been knocked down by riot police and Getty photographer Rich Lam was there to capture the tender moment.
