Summer slimming

Ok, so it's only April but many people are already worrying about their holidays and the inevitable beach body nightmare. SInce there is a plethora of strange diets people use to slim for summer, Hot Searches is taking a (somewhat irreverant) look at some of the recent popular ones.

The Atkins Diet
A diet that allows, nay advocates, eating steak, sausages and cheese! The idea was that if you denied your body carbohydrates, your metabolism would change and burn excess fat for energy. A handful of Hollywood A-listers followed the diet to some success, but there are many who say Atkins is not a healthy plan and is unrealistic to maintain longterm. And, of course, there's the stinky breath...

The Zone Diet
In order to reach 'The Zone' you have to separate all your meals into 40% carbohydrate, 30% proteins and 30% fats. Doing so is supposed to help you lose weight, increase your physical performance and even slow down ageing! However, it does seem extremely tedious and nutrionists claim it's ineffective since it is energy intake that causes weight loss or gain and not food nutrient composition.

The Grape Diet
This is pretty self-explanatory. You eat grapes. This is a detox diet on which you consume nothing but grapes and water to clean out your insides. It claims to be able to heal various illnesses including cancer. And of course, a side effect of eating nothing but grapes is that you lose weight. Although you may suffer from vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, weakness and an urge to rest, headaches, migraines, backache and other body pains! The diet explains that this is how you know it is working. Is anyone else a little sceptical?

The Caveman Diet
Thousands of years ago, humans didn't have access to the kind of foods we eat today and they were all slim and fit. Therefore, if we eat the same foods as our paleolithic ancestors, surely we will be as slim and fit as they were? That's the thinking behind this crazy diet. You should only eat what can be hunted and gathered. Well, excuse me while I go set up my burger traps...

The Negative Calorie Diet
Most people have heard that eating celery burns more calories than the stick actually holds. So this means that if you eat lots of celery you end up with less calories than you started, hence the negative calorie diet. It's a very restrictive diet that's incredibly hard to follow, not very good for your health in the long term and makes you parp like a trooper!

Have you followed any fad diets? Did they work for you or were they a dismal failure? Leave a comment and tell us about your experiences.

Online security

Using the internet can be fraught with potential dangers such as credit card fraud, identify theft, viruses and scamming. But at the same time it's the most convenient way to do banking and shopping. Many people worry about their online privacy and a look at the top searches in security shows how they go about protecting themselves.

Top web security searches:
  1. Phishing protection
  2. Firewall solution
  3. Antivirus packages
  4. Email security
  5. PC parental controls
  6. Anti spam software
  7. Automatic security updates
  8. Online payment security
  9. Wireless security encryption
  10. Spware blockers
Firstly you must check for new security updates or set up your computer to run automatic updates (most operating systems have this function). Also make sure you install good antivirus software to protect you from all the viruses out there that can be picked up through emails and dodgy downloads. In the same vein, install anti-spyware tools to stop software that steals personal information and monitors your online behaviour. Firewalls are designed to block unauthorized external access to your network while allowing you to still browse the internet. To save time looking for this software, you can simply download AOL Security Suite powered by McAfee - an 8 in 1 security software protect that has everything from anti-virus to identity protection to keep you safer.

While you may have all this software and hardware to protect your PC, it's usually human error that leads to security breaches. Make sure you choose passwords carefully - ones that are (hopefully) impossible to guess and easy for you to remember. If you must write them down then do as the wise old Gandalf advised and 'keep it secret; keep it safe!' Phishing is a kind of online fraud that tricks people into giving away personal details. Don't be fooled by anyone! You probably wouldn't trust a man knocking at your front door claiming he was from your bank and could he please have your credit card PIN, would you? So don't trust any emails unless you're sure where they're from.

Have you ever been a victim of online crime? Do you feel safe using internet banking or shopping? Leave a comment and share your experiences.

Hot Searches: Budget 2009

Filed under: Hot Searches, Money, April 2009

The hot topic online today is Alistair Darling's Budget. The outcome of his report seems to indicate that the country's higher earners are to be penalised, but there is some good news for savers and pensioners. Here is the Hot Search brief Budget breakdown:

  • Alcohol: spirits up 13p a bottle, wine up 4p a bottle, beer up 1p a pint
  • Petrol up 2p a litre from September
  • Cigarettes up 7p for a packet of 20
  • Pension up 2.5%
  • Income tax up to 50% for those paid over £150k
  • ISA limit increase from £7,200 to £10,200
  • Drivers given £2000 off a new car when trading in old
  • Stamp duty holiday extended for properties under £175,000
  • £500m goes to housing projects inc £100m for energy efficient homes
  • £50m goes to armed forces housing
  • £50b to boost mortgage lending
  • Airport taxes to increase
  • Increase in national debt will cause the pound to weaken making travelling more expensive
  • £1.7b to Job Centres, guaranteed jobs for under 25s who are out of work for a year
These are some of the key changes that will affect our everyday lives. And of course there was the unsurprising news that the economy will take longer to recover than previously forecast. So it seems as though we'll all have to try to look on the bright side - which is a little easier to do in the current pleasant climate. Apart from Budget searches, the weather has been a popular search over the past few days as everyone is desperately hoping this warm spell will continue. Unfortunately, judging by the BBC, the weekend is looking rather damp, so enjoy the sun while it lasts!

St George's Day

Tomorrow is St George's Day, the patron saint of England. Sadly the day is not a public holiday and tends not to get as much recognition as St Patrick's Day. Although this is probably because Paddy has the backing of Guinness stout and all their publicity resources. The English ale Bombardier is trying to get a similar campaign going and have set up a petition to make St George's Day a public holiday - search for their website and sign up if you agree!

Boris Johnson, the current Mayor of London, is planning some St. George's festivities on Saturday in Trafalgar Square that will include folk music performances and celebrations for Shakespeare's birthday, which is also on the 23rd. In previous years (despite Mr Johnson's claims) St. George's Day has been celebrated in Trafalgar Square with traditional English food and drinks and even a Monty Python world record coconut orchestra playing 'Always Look on the Bright Side of Life'. If you are in London over this weekend and fancy a knees-up and a few pints of ale, head to Trafalgar Square.

What should we be celebrating on St.George's Day? A knight who slayed a dragon? Or a Roman soldier who became a martyr? I think we should celebrate all the great things that are quintessentially English. Things like bangers and mash or fish and chips, standing in queues, drinking tea and beer (not together!), Queen, morris dancing, talking about the weather, pubs, fry ups, a stiff upper lip, The Beatles, rugby and cricket. Would you like the day to be a national holiday, and how would you celebrate it? Leave a comment and let us know.

Beam me up, Scotty

Filed under: Hot Searches, April 2009

We made it through Monday, phew! So why not relax and reward yourself by catching up with the latest hot searches on the web?

Susan Boyle is continuing to wow the world with her voice. The video of her performance on Britain's Got Talent has been viewed over 100 million times on YouTube! Although she is now facing competition from 12-year-old Shaheen Jafargholi, whose impressive CV has caused complaints by those who feel the show should be for amateurs.

A fatal motorway incident that occurred on Saturday claimed the lives of 5 people whose identities were revealed today. The crash happened after one vehicle performed an illegal U-turn and began driving the wrong way up the M1. Police have yet to understand what caused the driver to drive the wrong way.

London's Leicester Square was a haven for geeks and Trekkies as the new Star Trek movie premiered last night. The film follows the early years of James T Kirk and Spock while they are still cadets at Starfleet Academy and features Sylar from Heroes as Spock and Shaun of the Dead's Simon Pegg as Scotty.

London Marathon

The Flora London Marathon is taking place this Sunday and thousands of sweaty joggers will be making their way around the gruelling 26 miles 385 yards course around London. Both professional runners and amateurs who are raising money for charity take part and the time it takes to complete the course can vary between 2 and 6 hours.

Have you ever wondered if you have what it takes to be a marathon runner? It takes a lot of commitment and training. First off, if you can run 6 miles then you could probably train up in about 6 months but you'll have to find the time to train for between half an hour to an hour nearly every day of the week. And if you're a complete novice, you may need up to a year to prepare - don't believe what you've seen on 'Run, Fat Boy, Run'!

Apart from all the training you need to put in, you also have to buy various pieces of kit. Contrary to what you might think, you do need more than just yourself and a pair of trainers. The right kind of trainers is vitally important so that your feet are well cushioned and you don't injure yourself. You'll also need the right kind of clothes that 'wick' away sweat from your skin and prevent chafing (bleeding nipples is a nasty but real risk of the sport). Then you may need handheld GPS equipment for your long runs and a gym to train in when the weather's really bad.

There's actually quite a lot involved in running a marathon - you really have to respect all those people taking part this Sunday. But just imagine how good it would feel to cross the finish line! Would you be willing to give it a go or have you already completed one? Leave a comment and tell us about it.

Top running searches:
  1. Running shoes New Balance
  2. Marathon running equipment
  3. GPS hand held
  4. Treadmill
  5. Charity marathon
  6. Runners gear
  7. London marathon charity places

A brief guide to the Budget

This year's government Budget is later than usual because of the current economic climate and will be released on the 22nd April. But what does it all mean? Is it just the government spending on big things that don't really impact our everyday lives? Not at all. Every single person who lives in the UK should be aware of how the government plans to use taxpayers' money.

The three taxes that increase every year without fail and are a popular topic of conversation are for petrol, alcohol and cigarettes. It's pretty much always bad news for drinkers, smokers and drivers - last year Alistair Darling put 4p on a pint of beer, 14p on a bottle of wine and 55p on a bottle of spirits. He also raised duty on a packet of cigarettes by 11p and made an increase of 2p on petrol duty that was introduced in October. The government are keen to discourage drinking alcohol and smoking and they also want to be seen to be helping the environment by taxing fuel. In the same vein, there is talk this year of introducing incentives for people who scrap or trade in their old polluting bangers for something greener. Last year's Budget's environmental bid was to include charges for retailers who did not attempt to reduce their plastic bag usage. It's a very noble idea but many people feel that environmental needs are not addressed nearly enough and others think that fixing the current crisis should come first before spending on green matters.

The Budget also affects benefits and tax credits, so it is really important to people with young children and recipients of disability, housing and other benefits. Pensioners are affected by changes to winter fuel allowances and small business owners can be affected greatly by changes to capital gains tax and small business loans. Other areas covered by the Budget are flight taxes, stamp duty, savings, education and the economy in general. If this year's Budget is successful, it could mean bringing an end to the current recession sooner rather than later. To see how it will affect your wallet, search for online Budget calculators and for more detailed articles check out AOL Money.

Do you think the Budget addresses the right issues or do you find it unfair? Leave a comment and tell us what you think.

Desperately seeking Susan

Filed under: Hot Searches, April 2009

The Easter holiday has been and gone, as has all the chocolate, so we're bringing you today's hottest searches on the web for a sweet treat to keep you going until the weekend.

The new series of Britain's Got Talent shocked viewers with the surprisingly sweet voice of Susan Boyle. The unemployed 48-year-old from West Lothian, Scotland had dreams of following in the footsteps of Elaine Paige, although her appearance on stage intially underwhelmed the judges. However once she began singing 'I Dreamed A Dream' from Les Miserables, she quickly wowed the judges, audience and the whole country with her exceptional voice, even reducing people to tears. No doubt her Elaine Paige career will soon be set in motion.

Another shocker this week was the enormous cost involved in Mel Gibson's imminent divorce. After denying rumours of an affair with a young Russian girl, Mel's wife of 28 years, Robyn, has filed for divorce. He now stands to lose half of his £640m fortune. That's the price celebrities pay for not setting up pre-nups. Although, to give them credit, 28 years is a stable relationship by Hollywood standards!

Top searches for Thursday, 16th April:
  1. Britain's Got Talent - series 3 began on 11th April
  2. Mel Gibson divorce - separating after 28 years of marriage
  3. Drinkers lose benefits - alcoholics may be penalised
  4. 99p bikini - recession-busting beachwear
  5. Angels and Demons - popularity grows for the controversial movie
  6. House prices - dropping again after a brief rise last month
  7. UK weather - typically unpredicable
  8. Susan Boyle - wows judges with her voice
  9. Hillsborough disaster - the 20th anniversary of the tragic incident

Personal insurance - is it worth it?

Insurance can be a boring thing. Hundreds of companies bombard you every day with adverts to buy insurance for just about every aspect of your life. And, of course, the insurers are adamant that it is essential because they are after your premiums. It's easy to become sceptical about what they're offering. But unless you can be sure that your life is entirely risk-free - that you'll never crash your car, become ill, have your flight cancelled or even drop your phone in the toilet - then it might just be worth buying into insurance. Get ahead on your research by checking out our top insurance related searches.

Top insurance searches:
  1. Insurance quote comparisons
  2. Auto insurance
  3. Life insurance quotes
  4. Online insurance
  5. Contents insurance
  6. Travel insurance quotes
  7. House insurance
  8. Pet insurance
  9. Cheap mobile phone insurance
  10. Private medical insurance
Before you go ahead, ask yourself a few questions such as: is having peace of mind about certain things necessary to you? Is it worth the price you're being quoted? And how much would an accident cost you if you weren't covered? Some people may feel that they can simply save money and pay for incidents as and when they arise. However, if you need medical care and don't want to wait around for NHS treatment, going private can be very costly. But on the other hand, for things such as mobile phone insurance - are the premiums and the excess worth the original cost of the phone? It's a really good idea to weigh up all the pros and cons before you purchase insurance.

In some cases, there is no question about buying insurance such as with cars. Without car insurance you can not drive. The good news is that you can shop around with lots of different providers and find a good deal (of course it helps if you have several years of no-claims). Some people are lucky enough to be offered various policies through company insurance schemes and these can range from medical and dental to unemployment protection and life insurance. If you are offered these through work, take advantage of them! Remember that in most cases, it's better to be cautious about the future.

Do you think that insurance is worthwhile? Leave a comment and share your thoughts.

Gadgets galore

As more and more gadgets and gizmos flood the UK market, we Brits are becoming increasingly techno-savvy. Proof of this can be seen in the popularity of Channel 5's The Gadget Show, which exhibits live every year from Birmingham's NEC. Another sign of the rise of gadgets can be seen in the number of web searches made for them and these are some of the most popular gadget searches.

Laptops - the smaller the better. Currently you can buy teeny tiny little netbooks such as the Asus Eee PC or the Sony Vaio P-series. These little laptops have 10" screens and can fit in a handbag or briefcase easily and yet they still have up to 2GB of RAM and loads of storage. They also come at a mini (ish) price of about £300.

iPhones and mobile phone applications are all the rage right now especially as you can download free apps from the web. Games, maps, dictionaries, currency converters - these are just a few of the apps you can install on your phone. And it's not just phone apps that you've been downloading for free. Judging by the number of computer software searches, it seems there's a lot of discounts being found. Another popular way of saving money with gadgets is to buy your own photo printer instead of taking your digital camera's memory card to a photoshop.

One popular search that will probably be of great interest to many people is converting VHS to DVDs. With the advent of Blu-Ray, these days VHS are almost obsolete - so what do you do with your old collection? Don't worry it is possible to convert to a new format. It just requires a bit of patience and the correct cables for your VHS player and TV.

Make the most of the bank holiday

Now that Easter is over, there's still loads of school holiday left and without any activities planned, you'll either end up with kids under your feet, turning your house upside-down, or zombies that once were kids turned square-eyed from too much TV and video games. Here are a few holiday hints taken from the most popular searches on the web for school holiday activites.

Taking the kids away on holiday will keep them entertained but you'll want to go somewhere that you can enjoy too, which is why a short stay in France is ideal. It's easy to get to the continent these days with lots of cheap flights, eurostar or ferries to choose from. Once there you can find many deals for campsites (with chalets, not just tents!), so you can enjoy the warm weather and beautiful countryside or beaches and the kids have all sorts of entertainments and activities nearby. Alternatively, a holiday in the UK can be just as much fun and relaxing as abroad without the hassle of passports and currency exchange.

For those of you who are staying at home over the holidays, you can still find ways to keep the kids busy such as trips to the local swimming pool - especially if you can find one with waterslides. Leisure centres are great places to find new activities such as climbing or - children will enjoy the challenge and they'll be tired out an quiet by the end of the day! There are a lot of amusement parks in the UK that are continuously developing new rides and often have discounts on tickets in conjunction with rail tickets. A picnic can be a fun and inexpensive family outing - you could get the kids to help make a tasty spread and then visit a nearby park, forest or even your back garden. Or perhaps visiting a gallery or museum would be a good way for both the kids and you to get some culture as well as entertainment.

Bank Holiday washout?

Probably the most popular topic of conversation for the British is the weather and this is because we get more than our fair share of erratic elements. With the Easter Bank Holiday coming this weekend, the one thing you can rely on is the unreliable weather. One minute the forecast predicts rain all weekend (which is probably what we expect!) and the next it says we can expect sunny skies - fingers crossed! So make sure you have backup plans and prepare for all climates.

Don't be disheartened if the weather is grim, remember that a bank holiday is an extra day to do what you want to do. If it's pouring down, you've got a chance to spend time with your family playing games, or you could spend all day in bed, watch DVDs and eat popcorn. As it's Easter, setting up an indoor egg hunt is a fun way to spend the day for both kids and adults. You can still enjoy a BBQ even if the weather is damp - just bring the food indoors once it's cooked! And there are all sorts of fun activities you can do indoors such as going to a swimming pool, visiting galleries and museums, indoor sports centres with tennis or climbing or golf, you could go to the theatre or visit friends and relatives. You can find all sorts of things to do if you search online and get creative.

If you have already made plans to travel over the holiday, rain or shine, you should make careful preparations before setting out on a driving journey, including finding out about local traffic and weather conditions. If it rains and you plan to drive, make sure you check your windscreen wipers and remember to leave longer stopping distances and drive slower! The AA expect there to be around 18million drivers on the roads over the Bank Holiday, so be careful! Hopefully the weather will hold up and everyone will enjoy a lovely sunny Easter.

What are your plans for the weekend and will you be put off by bad weather? Leave a comment and tell us your thoughts.

Are you a chocoholic?

It's a pretty safe bet that this weekend there will be a huge amount of chocolate eaten. Easter and chocolate go hand-in-hand, especially as the UK is a nation of chocolate fans. Every year we spend £4billion on chocolate - that's about £65 per person! Judging by the number of web searches made every day, our love affair with chocolate extends beyond just eating it to searching for it online too.

Why is chocolate so popular? Of course it tastes good, but it has also been suggested that it contains naturally occurring chemicals that make you feel good. When ingested, phenylethylamine is supposed to cause your body to feel the same way as when you fall in love and theobromine triggers the release of endorphins, which make the body feel good. So it's no wonder that people think of chocolate as a guilty pleasure.

Happily, recent research has shown that eating dark chocolate rich in cocoa can be good for your health. The cocoa bean contains antioxidants that can reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease. I think that's a pretty good excuse for eating chocolate!

So when you're choosing your Easter eggs this weekend, try to go for dark chocolate for a flavonoid-full antioxidant treat. But if you are seduced by milk and white chocolate, remember that they do at least contain calcium, which is good for your bones. Or alternatively, just admit that you love chocolate and tuck in sans-guilt.

Danielle's dramatic departure

Filed under: Hot Searches, April 2009

I hope everyone's enjoying their 4-day week so far and looking forward to the Easter holiday. In the meantime, here is the breakdown of today's hottest searches for your reading pleasure, so sit back and enjoy!

The top search of the day that's been causing quite a stir is about poor little Danielle Jones from EastEnders. The intriguing longterm storyline in which Danielle, played by Lauren Crace, tried to be reunited with her estranged mother Ronnie Mitchell captivated a huge audience last Friday. Moments after Ronnie finally realised that Danielle was her daughter, Danielle was hit by a car and died in her mother's arms. This shocking end to the story outraged thousands of fans, some of whom even set up a Facebook goup to complain, but despite the public outcry, it seems unlikely that Danielle will be brought back from the dead.

The new tax year began yesterday and with it came rates changes, some good and some bad. The good news is a rise in the basic state pension by 5%, pension credits, child tax credits, the personal allowance and the inheritance tax threshold all increased. Not so good news for people earning over £40k as National Insurance is now payable at 11% on the first £43,875.

With all this financial news weighing heavy on people's minds, it's no wonder that the credit-crunch busting 99p bikini is garnering interest. The 99p Store has a range of bikinis in 6 different colours as well as other beachwear to accessorize with such as a cowboy hat and flip flops. The whole outfit costs less than a fiver!

Will you be buying a bargain bikini or signing the save Danielle petition? Leave a comment and share your thoughts.

  1. Danielle EastEnders - outrage at the character's death
  2. New tax year changes - how will they affect you?
  3. Jade Goody photos - remembering her life
  4. House prices - rose by 0.9%
  5. Power shower ban - government agency plans to conserve water

Comment of the Week

  • "Some of these were mildy scary but the scariest film I ever saw was called "Satan's triangle" and starred Doug McClure. It was on the box late one night in about 1975 and when it finished I was shakey. About 5 mins later the phone rang (it was one o'clock in the morning), on the other end was my brother-in-law, he had watched it too and was too scared to go to bed."
