F1: Lifestyles of the rich and famous

Filed under: Sport, Lifestyles, March 2009

Formula 1 is an expensive and exciting sport with fast cars, exotic locations, beautiful women (check out the pit babes here) and lots of money flying around. The drivers can earn huge salaries - sometimes in the region of £10m a year! There is also prize money to be won by the top 10 teams of the championship but these figures are not often disclosed. The teams need vast amounts of money in order to have the best staff and the best high-tech cars. So it's not at all surprising that the drivers live extravagant playboy lifestyles while we normal folk read about them jealously in OK and Hello Magazine.

Lewis Hamilton, last year's F1 champion, is just an ordinary boy from Stevenage whose father held down three jobs to pay for his son's interest in racing. Now, all that hard work has obviously paid off! Lewis owns a home in Switzerland (as do many F1 drivers to take advantage of the tax breaks - for him an estimated £4m+ a year!), he was also looking for a London pied-à-terre to share with his glamorous Pussycat Dolls lead singer girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger. He recently bought a 90ft yacht worth £5m that has eight bedrooms including a master suite, a VIP suite and two guest cabins and a luxury lounge with plasma TVs. The yacht is painted to match Hamilton's McLaren racing car in silver and black and is kept in Monaco.

Lewis isn't the only F1 driver taking advantage of Switzerland's tax breaks. In that country you will also find houses owned by such current and past legends as Jean Alesi, David Coulthard, Fernando Alonso, Alain Prost, Jacques Villeneuve, Jackie Stewart and Michael Schumacher. In fact, Schumacher's palatial home is a 650 m² mansion with its own underground garage and petrol station, and it's situated on a private beach on Lake Geneva.

Don't assume that these fabulously rich drivers are tied down to one country. David Coulthard also owns houses in London, Belgium and another tax-haven, Monaco. He also owns several luxury hotels in the UK and in Monaco. Monaco has long been a popular home for F1 drivers, no doubt because of the Grand Prix circuit that takes place in its streets. But surely aslo because of the casino in Monte Carlo, the first-class hotels and exciting nightlife and the leisure facilities for the rich and famous. In Monaco you will also find the houses of Jenson Button (who also owns houses in the UK and Bahrain), Nico Rosberg, Alex Wurz, Giancarlo Fisichella and Felipe Massa.

There are many more perks to being a rich and famous racing driver. For example, Felipe Massa is good friends with the Swiss watchmaker Richard Mille. Mille has dedicated several watches to the F1 driver and I'm fairly certain that he is given his own models to wear. Another brand of expensive watch that likes to sponsor F1 drivers is TAG Heuer. They have Lewis Hamilton, Kimi Räikkönen, Sébastien Bourdais and Heikki Kovalainen as some of their 'brand ambassadors' who are sponsored by the company and get to wear their stylish watches.

Apart from watches, F1 drivers are usually given a carmaker's top performance model when they sign up to race under them. Imagine being given a top of the range Ferrari, for free! Most top F1 drivers own fantastic sports cars, or - like Fernando Alonso - classic cars, and of course if asked they would all state unequivocally that the best perk of being a Formula 1 driver is driving all those super fast cars. Although, there are so many more attractions to the lifestyle than just driving such as travelling the world and staying in exotic locations.

The Grand Prix circuit visits some of the world's most exciting places such as Brazil, Japan, Italy, Abu Dhabi and Spain amongst others. Of course, all F1 drivers get to fly first class while being served gourmet meals, champagne and other complimentary drinks. Some drivers, like Rubens Barrichello, even own their own planes! His Embraer Legacy means that he can travel quickly between his races and therefore have more time to spend with his family. Having your own plane would certainly cut down waiting time at the airport! Being so well-travelled, F1 drivers know all the best places to go for luxurious holidays. They are really spoilt for choice: first-class hotels, their own boats (Giancarlo Fisichella's is moored in Sardinia), luxury cruises or even staying in one of their own many homes around the world.

To sample just a small slice of the good life, you could plan a trip to one of the Grand Prix race venues. Formula 1 tickets can cost between £50 - £470 depending on whether you want to see tests or races and where you sit. Should you want to see the races in foreign climes, you'll also need to book some flights and hotel accommodation, but it would so be worth it to be at the track, smell the burning rubber and petrol fumes and hear the engines revving and roaring. Then maybe bump into some of the drivers and discuss the best watch brands and whether flying first class or by private jet is preferable ... ok, maybe not.

Do you plan to see the Grand Prix in person? Who do you think will win this year's championship? Leave a comment and tell us what you think.

Celebrity chefs

Celebrity chefs have been around for a long time but it's only in the last twenty or so years that TV cooking has become really glamorous with celebrities such as Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver putting the heat back in the kitchen. Nowadays there are a lot of chefs and celebrity foodies on TV in cookery programmes and competitions. And no doubt everyone has watched one at some point and felt inspired to culinary creativity - to varying degrees of success!

There are different types of celebrity chefs, trained chefs who own restaurants, food writers and journalists and television personalities. Gordon Ramsay is trained chef who is the owner of many restaurants - one of which, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, has been awarded three Michelin stars. He has appeared in the TV shows Boiling Point, Kitchen Nightmares, Hell's Kitchen and The F-Word, in which he made a name for himself for his fiery temper and foul language. He also starred in Cookalong Live in which viewers were meant to follow him in the creation of a 3 course meal in under 60 minutes.

Jamie Oliver first appeared on our screens as The Naked Chef and quickly gained popularity through being a no-frills, down-to-earth lad who viewers could relate to. He then went on to make a name for himself by campaigning for healthy school dinners, for eating free-range chicken on Jamie's Fowl Dinners, for improving pig farming conditions on Jamie Saves Our Bacon and for creating a restaurant, Fifteen, which employs disadvantaged young people. He also recently tried to encourage the nation to learn how to cook fresh, healthy food in his Ministry of Food.

Heston Blumenthal is almost more of a scientist than a chef, although he owns the three-Michelin-starred restaurant The Fat Duck, which was recently in the news for a case of suspected food poisoning that turned out to be the norovirus (winter vomiting bug - yum!). He has published several books such as his In Search of Perfection series and also The Big Fat Duck Cook Book. His TV shows included Big Chef Takes on Little Chef in which he attempted to revamp the Little Chef menu and more recently he has been preparing authentic feasts from the Tudor, Victorian and other historic periods. Some of his signature dishes sound quite bizarre, such as smoked bacon-and-egg ice cream and snail porridge.

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall advocates going back to basics and eating organic, natural foods. His River Cottage TV series show him living self-sufficiently, raising his own livestock and farming his own produce. He is well known for his messy appearance and willingness to make dishes out of strange things such as roadkill and hedgerow plants. His River Cottage Cookbook series have been very popular including a specific River Cottage Meat Book and River Cottage Fish Book.

Nigella Lawson is not a trained chef but instead started as a food journalist. She is famous for her flirtatious presenting style and adjective-laden descriptions of food. Nigella has had several successful TV series and accompanying cookbooks including Nigella Bites and Nigella Express, which shows how to make quick meals without resorting to ready meals or junk food. Her books How To Be A Domestic Goddess and Nigella Bites were nominated and awarded various awards.

Delia Smith has been appearing in cookery programmes since the 1970s. She also was a food writer rather than a chef, but her TV programmes such as How To Cook have been incredibly popular and have caused items of cookware and ingredients that she uses (such as the Kenwood mini-chopper and Aunt Bessie's mashed potato) to sellout in shops once endorsed by her. Delia is a household name nowadays and her recipe books including How to Cheat at Cooking continue to be bestsellers.

Anthony Worrall Thompson, or AWT, is a chef and restaurant owner who has fully embraced his TV chef status and regularly appeared in programmes such as Ready Steady Cook and Saturday Kitchen. He's written many cookbooks such as Anthony's Weekend Cookbook and he also recently appeared on I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here.

Recently chefs specialising in certain cuisines have gained popularity such as Anjum Anand who stars in Indian Food Made Easy and Ching-He Huang who stars in Chinese Food Made Easy. These two BBC Food programmes teach viewers how to make delicious Indian and Chinese recipes that are simple and healthy so you can give your local takeaway a miss.

The BBC have many chefs featuring on their TV programmes and on their web video console Get Cooking. This summer from the 10-14 June, they are holding the BBC Good Food Show at the Birmingham NEC where you will be able to see celebrity chefs cooking live. Ainsley Harriot, the Hairy Bikers, James Martin, Angela Hartnett and many others will be cooking delicious dishes at the show. Book tickets now if you fancy learning from the masters.

Speaking of learning from the masters, if you hope to become the next celebrity chef there are cookery courses available from top famous chefs. For example the Saturday Kitchen Curry Course is a 3-hour lesson in the basics of making a great curry. You could join a cookery day with Lesley Waters (from Ready Steady Cook) at Chantmarle Manor in Dorset. Rick Stein has a Seafood School in Cornwall, Nick Nairns' Cook School is situated in Scotland and at Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons you can learn to cook in the school set up by Raymond Blanc.

Are you a keen chef or do you prefer to sit back and watch the experts at work? Leave a comment and tell us who your favourite celebrity chefs are, or if you think you'd make a better one!

Get fitter fast

How many people made New Year's resolutions to take more exercise, and how many people joined a gym with the best intentions? Now, three months later, how many people are still going to the gym and following their exercise plans? Not quite as many, I'm betting. Don't feel bad though! It's not easy to stick to an exercise regime - it does require willpower and enthusiasm. But since summer is approaching, maybe it's time to get back in the exercise bike's saddle. Check out the most popular searches in fitness and health for some ideas to get you started.

If you haven't already joined a gym, it might be a good place to start. You get access to a variety of exercise machines, personal training and advice if you need it and maybe even a swimming pool. The most popular gyms are Virgin Active, LA Fitness, David Lloyd and Fitness First. Now is a good time to get a membership as many gyms are offering spring discounts and offers on fees. Not everyone can afford gym memberships, but that doesn't mean that you can't use gym facilities. Most gyms will allow you to attend exercise classes such as yoga, pilates, aerobics and spinning, without being a member (of course you will have to pay per session).

Maybe the gym isn't for you. In that case, using home gym equipment is a good alternative. You can easily buy scaled down versions of the machines you find in gyms such as rowing machines, exercise bikes and elliptical trainers that are just as effective as long as you use them correctly. These machines should be able to offer you good resistance training, as well as cardio workouts. The treadmills and crosstrainers used in gyms tend to cost a few thousand pounds each but it's easy to find cheaper versions at shops such as Argos. They may not have all the functionality of the gym ones but they will still make you get a sweat on! You can also search for second hand and used fitness equipment.

For toning and weight training exercises, dumbells and barbells are widely available, and if you're going to be bench pressing, you will also require a weights bench. Many people find that supplementing their weight training with fitness products such as protein supplements and creatine is effective. However, always check with your doctor before taking these kind of supplements in case they're not right for you. To tone up your abs, you need to do lots of situps. To help you with your workout there is a great variety of abdominal exercise equipment available such as the Roman Chair and resistance bands.

Exercise balls have increased in popularity recently due to their simplicity and low price. It's basically a big ball that you can use in different exercises to train the core muscles - the abdominal back muscles. You can find them easily online and also plenty of exercise ball workout plans to show you how to use them.
Another excellent piece of home exercise equipment is the humble skipping rope. They're not just for kids! If you have the space to use one, they're cheap and effective for cardio exercise and building stamina - why do you think boxers use them?

Speaking of boxing, it's an excellent way to add some variation to your exercise routine. You don't have to spar with other people - you can just get some boxing gloves and a punch bag and take out some aggression on it. If you find that you want to go further than this, there are kickboxing, martial arts and boxing classes taking place all over the country. It's a really popular way to exercise and it can also be a lot of fun!

Exercising at home can often be scuppered through lack of motivation. It can be really tough keeping up your exercise plan alone. If you workout with other people then that's brilliant - you can spur each other on. If not then maybe an exercise DVD would help? This way you have an instructor right there in your home to tell you what to do and encourage you to keep going. Yoga DVDs, pilates DVDs, aerobic workout and celebrity exercise DVDs - there are so many different types of DVDs that you're bound to find one to suit.

Are you a gym bunny or home-exerciser? Have you let your good intentions lapse or are you regularly pumping iron? Leave a comment and share your exercise anecdotes.

Trace your roots

Family treeThe BBC programme Who Do You Think You Are? has featured such celebrities as Rory Bremner, Fiona Bruce, Rick Stein, Zoe Wanamaker and Kevin Whately. These celebrities delved into their family trees to discover where their roots lie.

By searching through archives, museums, personal diaries and other sources of information, the celebrities unearthed fascinating stories about grandparents and great-grandparents involving war, immigration, scandals and great acheivements.

Finding out about your family's past is fascinating but it's not the easiest thing to do. Happily, there are places you can research online for example: freebmd.org.uk for some birth, marriage and death records in England and Wales, familysearch.org for selected parish records and rootsweb.com. These are all free to use so get the most out of them! You should start by drawing up your family tree, but if you get stuck creating it, there are plenty of online tools to help you or you can purchase family tree building software to make the task easier.

There are other genealogy websites which may require you to pay for their use but they usually offer you a free trial period. These are sites like ancestry.co.uk and genesreunited.com. You can try searching for births, marriages and deaths records as these will likely hold important information about relatives. The 1911 census, which can be found online, will also be an excellent mine of information.

If someone in your family had a military past, the records for military history are very accurate and could help you learn some secrets about your family's past. Or maybe there was a black sheep in your family - you could learn about their exploits through articles in newspaper archives or through the Old Bailey's archive of proceedings in criminal trials.

From the 27Feb - 1 Mar 2009, Who Do You Think You Are? Live took place at the Olympia exhibition centre in London. If you were able to make it down there you would have seen all kinds of brilliant stands and talks that explained how to go about researching your family history. One brilliant exhibitor was Family Tree DNA. The experts from this company can use DNA testing to discover where your ancestors came from. But don't worry if you missed the show, you can still search online for DNA testing for yourself.

Inside your ideal home

The credit crunch and falling house prices mean that not many people are able to move house right now, so instead of changing your location, you can change your house. If you make the most of your living space, you may not even recognise your home any more!

Top DIY searches:
  1. Home improvement
  2. Power tools
  3. Wood flooring
  4. Wallpaper
  5. Curtains
  6. Carpet
  7. DIY
  8. Paint colour chart
  9. Loft conversions
  10. Upholstering
A simple way to start some home improvement is to declutter your house. If you take a good look around and can see lots of junk that you never use, clothes you never wear and things you keep 'just in case' that are really not as useful as you'd thought, it's about time to get brutal and throw all that rubbish away! If it seems a monumental task, you can hire the services of a clutter consultant who will help to bring order to your chaos. You may also need to visit some recycling centres and think about waste management if you have a lot of stuff to get ride of. Or if you truly believe in 'waste not want not' you could make some cash from your clutter. Go to a car boot sale, sell your items through AOL Classifieds, list your items on eBay or another online auction site, or give it away by listing it on Freecycle.

Once you've dealt with your clutter, you may find that your house doesn't have the best storage solutions, which is why the clutter built up. If you have large items to store then you should search for storage companies that keep your belongings locked up safe until you need it. These can be especially useful if you decide to extend your house and need to keep furniture out of harm's way for a while. There are all sorts of useful home storage solutions available such as furniture with multi purposes, foldaway beds, stackable boxes and space-saving shelving.

So now your home has plenty of space - you can see the walls! But when was the last time your walls were decorated? Maybe it's time to tear down that flock pattern wallpaper and paint over the cracks. At the Ideal Home show you'll find lots of exhibitors such as B&Q and BBC Good Homes Magazine who can offer advice on how to redecorate without blowing your budget. There are also many retailers of carpets, painting and decorating equipment, tools and soft furnishings. Of course, you can also check out their websites for further information. Search for ideas about painting colour schemes and soft furnishings to match.

Finding the right kind of furniture to match your newly decorated room is important. You can find all sorts of ideas on the website for the Ideal Home Show about how to update your furniture. You don't necessarily have to buy new things, an alternative is to refurbish old items that have become worn. For example, a chair with tatty coverings could be upholstered in new bright fabric.

Consulting with an interior designer could inspire you to change your home around on a grander scale than just decorating. Building an extension could repurpose and maximise your available space. Adding a loft conversion or renovating your basement may also increase the value of your property. However, make sure you shop around and get lots of advice before embarking on this kind of project. Extensions can take a long time depending on the kind of work you want done.

After all your aesthetic home improvements have been made, you might want to think about how green your house is. Small changes such as using energy saving lightbulbs will help both your pocket and the environment. Companies like Whirlpool are starting to produce energy efficient white goods - washing machines and dishwashers. Why not search for more ways to make your home environmentally friendly?

Weather: wellies and woolies

Filed under: Fashion, Shopping, March 2009

British weather is probably the most unpredictable in the world. One minute the sun is shining so brightly that you need your sunglasses, the sky is blue and people are out wearing shorts and T-shirts! Then all of a sudden, clouds gather and darken and rain pours down on people unprepared and without umbrellas.

In the old days, before the internet, if you wanted to know the weather forecast you had to catch it on the telly or radio after the news, or maybe you could trust your barometer. Happily these days, to plan for a day out, all you need is do is search for the weather online and there are lots of sites to check including the Met Office. Then you can decide what to wear for whatever the weather will be. Here's our quick look at the top searches in all-weather wear so that, like a Scout, you can be prepared.

Umbrellas
Undoubtedly they are the best way to keep dry when the weather takes a turn for the damp (which it usually does). The most sought after are golf umbrellas since their vastness is guaranteed to prevent even the most persistent rain from getting in your face. If these are too cumbersome for you, perhaps a convenient compact umbrella is more practical. Bubble umbrellas are trendy and keep you quite dry on account of their shape. Totes do a fun range of novelty umbrellas. Gustbuster umbrellas have come up with a windproof brolly so it won't turn inside out when the weather gets a bit blowy.

Raincoats
Not everyone wants to carry around an umbrella in case it might rain, so a popular alternative is a decent raincoat. They don't have to be those plastic cagoules - you could buy a much more trendy Burberry trench coat, but if you'd prefer something a bit more wallet-friendly, you can find stylish rain macs in Marks & Spencer. Other good places to look for high street raincoats are Next, TopShop and Burtons.

Wellington boots
They're not just for music festivals! In the recent snowstorms that hit the country, wellies had a resurgence in popularity. Even if it's raining and not snowing, it's so much nicer to not have damp trouser legs from walking through puddles. These days wellies come in all sorts of funky colours and styles - not just the plain green ones. Hunter boots do an amazing range of colours and Ugg has also brought out their own brightly patterned wellies. Fashion wellies are easy to find in most shoe shops now and children's wellies also have fun designs such as the old favourite frog eye ones.

Jumpers
Although it may sometime seem like summer's just around the corner, there's still bound to be plenty of chilly days ahead. It's a good idea to have a nice warm wool jumper to wrap up in. Knitwear can be very stylish and can be found in the collections of both high street stores and top designers. Cashmere is an especially luxurious material for a jumper and it's both warm and soft, Lambswool sweaters are cheaper but still very comfortable and Aran sweaters are always a popular chunky type of jumper.

Scarves
Scarves don't have to be thick and chunky some are light yet warm and suitable for spring. Popular scarves are desert or Arafat scarves, pashminas, ponchos, wraps amd silk scarves. They're a great accessory to have because you can wrap up in them when the wind blows, tuck them in a bag when it's warmer and they can even double as sarongs if the sun gets really strong. Tie one around your head and wear with oversized sunglasses for the Jackie O look.

Sunglasses
Both practical and effortlessly cool, everyone should own a pair of sunglasses that suit them. They can vary greatly in price but do be careful when buying a pair, and try to make sure that your new glasses will protect your eyes from UV rays. The popular designer sunglasses are brands like Ray-Ban, Police, Oakley and Versace. Of course, these all come with designer price tags, but it is possible to buy non-designer sunglasses which are trendy and will protect you from the sun. Try looking at stores such as Vision Express and Tesco Opticians for affordable sunglasses.

Sun hats
Even in Britain, if the sun's shining it's a good idea to have some kind of sun hat to prevent burning and harm from UV rays. A broad-brimmed hat is most effective for this, and you can find some really nice straw hats that are lightweight. Peaked caps are good for keeping the sun off your face, as are visors. Cowboy hats have been very popular recently and are great for holidays. Children are most in need of sun hats as their delicate skin burns far more easily.

Flip Flops
The ridiculous name belies just how sensible it is to own a pair of flip flops, or sandals if you will. They're practical, comfortable and can be kicked off and on easily, plus it's good to air your toes once in a while - especially if you're prone to smelly feet! Favourite flip flop searches are havaianas, reef flip flops, teva sandals and birkenstock sandals.

Mother's Day

Filed under: Seasonal, Shopping, March 2009

In case you'd forgotten, this Sunday is Mother's Day - aren't you lucky that Hot Searches is here to remind you! We can even give you some ideas about the most popular presents people are searching for and what the day is all about.

Probably the most popular Mother's Day gift is flowers. Traditionally, Mother's Day flowers are pink or white carnations, but any brightly coloured pretty bouquet is fine and some favourites are tulips, roses, germini, lilies, chrysanthemums and orchids. A bouquet delivered to the door would make a lovely surprise for your mum.

Searches for Mother's Day cards are hugely popular at the moment. If your mum is a bit of a hotshot with the computer, maybe she would appreciate a Mother's Day ecard. You can also find websites that allow you to create personalised cards. If you search for Mother's Day poems, you could find a nice verse to write in your card or get some ideas for writing your own. Of course a handmade card can be extra special and if you buy some bits and pieces from craft shops you could make your card look really pretty. It's a great project for kids to get involved in, and their mums will love receiving the cards their children make.

Mother's Day presents can be a bit more tricky to choose because it really depends on what your mum likes! But here are some top searches for Mother's Day gift ideas. Chocolates are always a good choice, maybe some luxury Belgian chocolates gift wrapped in a beautiful package. Some top quality chocolatiers are Hotel Chocolat and Thorntons. Pampering treats such as spa days, mother's day massages and mother's day beauty treatments are an excellent gift for an overworked mum. If your mum likes gardening then buy her some tools, seeds or a book of gardening tips. Contemporary jewellery makes a good gift, but make sure you know if your mum prefers silver or gold. Photo albums can also make lovely gifts for your mum - find a pretty one and fill it with photos of your family.

Mother's Day is supposed to be a time when you show your appreciation for your mother. One way to do this is to treat her to a meal. A fancy restaurant is a great place to have a Mother's Day meal and you could wash your food down with a glass of Mumm champagne! Instead of dinner, a spot of afternoon tea is a very civilised way to spend Mother's Day. There are lots of tea rooms around the country that sell fine teas from all over the world and delicious cakes too. And of course, breakfast in bed is surely the best treat of all to wake up to! So make sure you have a serving tray and brush up on your breakfast recipes.

The history of Mother's Day in Britain began with Mothering Sunday, which was the fourth Sunday of Lent (the Christian period of fasting leading up to Easter), and on this day Christians would go to mass at their 'mother church', the biggest church in their area. In these modern secular times, Mother's Day is now more of a celebration of motherhood, although it falls on the same day as the Christian holiday. Mother's Day is celebrated all over the world on different days according to different traditions but the idea behind it is pretty much universal: it's a reminder to not take your mum for granted, treat her with respect and spoil her too!

Oh and so you're extra prepared, don't forget that Father's Day will be on June 21st this year, so you have plenty of time to sort out a present!

St Patrick's Day

Top of the mornin' to ye, it's St. Patrick's Day! The patron saint of Ireland's feast day is celebrated with a bank holiday in Northern Ireland and a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland and Montserrat in the Caribbean, where many Irish settlers made their home in the fifteenth century.

The legends of Saint Patrick claim that it was he who explained the Christian Holy Trinity to the Irish by using a shamrock leaf to show the father, son and holy spirit as 3 beings and 1 God at the same time. The shamrock is now the national symbol of Ireland. The other more famous legend of Saint Patrick is that he banished all the snakes from Ireland. Although, experts claim that there were never any snakes in Ireland, so perhaps the story is an allergorical one. The religious holiday was celebrated for many years before being turned into a public holiday in the early 1900s. Around this time a law was passed to make pubs shut on St. Patrick's Day! Amazingly this law was only repealed in the 1970s. Just imagine St. Paddy's Day without drink!

St. Patrick's Day has great appeal outside Ireland too, especially in America, New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the UK. People of Irish descent and non-Irish people too enjoy celebrating the day with lots of drink and by wearing green and also by attending parades. In the UK you can find lots of St. Patrick's Day events. For example in London there was a festival which took place in Trafalgar Square. If you attended you would have been able to sample traditional Irish foods, watch Irish dances (like Riverdance), listen to Irish music and see Irish crafts and culture. There was also a parade of marching bands from Ireland and the UK that followed a route through London's main streets.

In Birmingham, there has been a week's worth of celebration up until today. Their parade was enormous and included bands, floats, horse-drawn carriages, tractors and all sorts. In Manchester St. Patrick's Day will be celebrated in nearly every pub and club in town! Feasts, dancing and stand-up comedy are some of the events you can attend today. In Nottingham today you can watch the colourful parade of musicians and dancers which will end up in the Old Market Square where they will be greeted by the Lord Mayor of Nottingham and of course there'll be lots of entertainments and refreshments.

So Paddy's Day is celebrated by all sorts of people, Irish or not. Those who aren't can be Irish for the day. And of course the appeal of the celebration is the drink. By far the most popular way to commemorate Saint Patrick is by drinking Guinness, Murphy's, Beamish and Baileys (mmmm Baileys). Without a doubt, Irish pubs all over the country will be holding their own celebrations. O'Neill's have pubs all over the country, Waxy O'Conner's can be found in London, Manchester and Glasgow, Hennessey's in Birminghan, O'Sheas in Manchester, Rosie O'Grady's in Oxford and so many more, I couldn't possibly list them all here. If you want to find a great Irish pub to celebrate in tonight, search online for Irish pubs in the UK.

Here's a treat for all you Simpsons fans: tonight at 7.30pm on Sky 1 and Sky 1 HD, a special St Patrick's Day episode of the Simpson's will be aired. This episode is premiering in the UK and Ireland a whole week before it shows in the States. (That's a first!) A couple of the show's execs and also Nancy Cartwright (who voices Bart Simpson) will be attending a screening of the episode in Ireland and then taking part in the Dublin parade, which is the biggest in Europe.

Although it's not exactly traditional, these days you can buy St. Patrick's Day cards and gifts. Shamrock charms, necklaces and bracelets, or Celtic style jewellery, a beer mug or a Fighting Irish T-shirt with their leprechaun logo all make execellent St. Patrick's Day gifts.

If you're not a big drinker, you could celebrate St. Patrick's Day by making some delicious traditional Irish food. You could make boxty, which are traditional potato pancakes, Aran spiosrai is a type of Irish spiced bread and so is barmbrack, colcannon is made from potatoes and cabbage and there's also hearty Irish stew and soda bread. Search for the recipes online and sample some Irish cuisine!

Spring has sprung!

DaffodilSpringtime begins when the clocks 'spring' forward in March, daffodils and bluebells start growing and winter finally comes to an end. Spring makes you feel an urge to change: out with the old and in with the new. In fact, I think it's a good time to do all the things you've been meaning to do like change your dreary winter wardrobe for some new clothes, get a new hairstyle, clean out your house from top to bottom, get a new job, go for a healthcheck, start a new exercise plan or plan for a holiday - it's a perfect time for spring cleaning your life.

Now that winter is coming to an end, who wants to keep wearing those dark heavy clothes? The shops are all bursting with bright new spring fashions at the moment so it's a great time to update your wardrobe. If you can't afford to buy all the spring trends, you can always buy one piece of clothing or an accessory in a bright colour which will lift your whole look for the spring.

Spring means spring cleaning. Cleaning's not fun but it is refreshing to get your windows cleaned, fling them wide open to air out your home, clean upholstery and carpets and have a whip round with the vacuum cleaner. You can always hire a maid service to do it for you! If you've horded junk over the winter, why not search for methods for decluttering your home? I love this time of year, and don't even mind having to do all that housework because when it's done, it feels like a new beginning, and as a final touch to the newly cleaned, sparkling house, a bunch of fresh flowers really brightens things up.

There are so many beautiful spring flowers to buy in the shops at the moment. Bulb flowers such as narcissus, daffodils, hyacinths and tulips are now in season and make lovely bouquets to display in your newly spring cleaned house! Many spring-flowering plants have delicious scents such as lily of the valley and lilac. And of course, all the trees will be blossoming - apple, cherry and plum.

For some, spring cleaning can also apply to their CVs. Since you're probably feeling motivated now, why not sort out your career? There are loads of helpful recruitment agencies online where you can post your CV or consult with a recruitment advisor. Even if you're not looking for a new job, it doesn't hurt to update your CV and see if there are any skills gaps that you could fill by taking a short course or finding more responsibilities in your current job.

Springtime is also a popular time to go for a health check. If it's been a while since your last doctor's appointment, you might find that your GP is extremely busy around now as other people get the same idea! This is the time of year when that unwelcome visitor hayfever starts to put in an appearance and more and more people every year are finding that they have the allergy and are searching for antihistamines. With prescription prices going up, it's important to stay healthy and avoid needing medication!

A good way to spring clean your health is to make sure you have a good diet with lots of healthy eating. Farmer's markets are great places to go in the spring as you can buy really fresh fruit and organic vegetables that are in season, so you know you're getting plenty of vitamins and nutritional food. You can search online for new healthy recipes to try that are low in fat and good for your heart.

As well as cleaning out your home, spring may make you feel like improving the whole house. Doing a spot of DIY is a great way to liven up your home. Break out those power tools - make Black & Decker happy! Maybe you could redecorate with a lick of paint or with new wallpaper. Building extensions and loft conversions can make it seem as though you've moved house!

While you're breathing new life into your home and career, you might also feel motivated to revitalise yourself and create a whole new you. You could learn a new skill, maybe join a dance class, take up yoga and get in touch with your spiritual side, quit smoking through hypnotherapy, or find some peace through meditation.

After all that spring cleaning I reckon it must be time to plan a well-deserved spring break! Many people are searching for holidays and flights for the Easter holiday period. Some top spring destinations are Tokyo, Cape Town and Arizona or a little closer to home: Paris, Amsterdam or Malta. Book some flights now and see spring around the world.

Red Nose Day

Get your red noses on because today is Comic Relief's Red Nose Day! Are you planning a fundraiser for today? All around the country in schools, offices and homes, people are dressing up in funny costumes, having sponsored silences, eating yummy red nose day cakes, holding quizzes, performing silly dances and waxing parts of their bodies - all in the name of charity.

Comic Relief holds Red Nose Day every year to raise money for people living in poverty in the Uk and Africa. Apart from all the fundraising events that occur around the country, Comic Relief also sell their famous red noses which you can buy in Sainsbury's and Oxfam and this year come in three different funny styles. There are also Red Nose Day T-shirts available from TK Maxx. So if you don't take part in a fundraiser, then at least go and pick your nose!

In the past there are have been a number of different noses such as the tomato nose, the growing nose, the hands nose and the shaggy nose. This year there are three: 'this one' has a big cheesy grin, 'that one' wears glasses and 'the other one' looks a little surprised! You can also buy deeley boppers, charms, pin badges, car noses, whoopee cushions and the Giggler.

There are a series of Comic Relief programmes being broadcast on BBC One. They involve a great lineup of comedy including Comic Relief does The Apprentice, which aired last night, Let's Dance for Comic Relief, which is on Saturday and tonight is the extravaganza, Comic Relief: Funny for Money as well as Comic Relief does Top of the Pops on BBC Two. For this special show, Oasis have donated a goody bag of signed merchandise and their new single, which can be bid for online at the Red Nose Auction Room. Loads of celebrities will be taking part in Funny for Money and making fools of themselves in order to raise money for the charity. Already, a group of celebrities climbed up Mount Kilimanjaro, taking seven days to reach the summit, and experiencing a few mishaps along the way.

For those who enjoy fundraising, Comic Relief issue fundraiser packs that give you sponsorship forms, posters to advertise your event and fundraising ideas. If you didn't plan an event you can still find someone who has and sponsor them, or you can donate to Comic Relief online or by telephone.

An awful lot of money is raised by Comic Relief, both on Red Nose Day and also throughout the year. The money is used in the UK to help people affected by poverty and hardship, young and old, those with mental health problems, refugees and victims of violence. It also goes to Africa to help women and girls, people affected by HIV and people living in slums.

Now you know what a worthwhile cause it is, and also how much fun it's going to be, I hope you decide to participate in some kind of Comic Relief event today. Leave a comment and tell us about your fundraising activities.

Cheltenham Festival

The Cheltenham Festival is a very famous and popular race meeting that takes place at the Cheltenham racecourse in Gloucestershire. Both English and Irish horses are raced there and because the festival is so near to St. Patrick's Day, you'll often see lots of Irish people there. You'll also often see Irish horses winning because National Hunt races (ones with jumps in) are generally favoured in Ireland over flat racing. In fact, even the old champion Red Rum was bred on the Emerald Isle.

To many people horse racing is almost as much a celebration of fashion as it is of top class racing. Many regard Royal Ascot as the premier racing event in the world with the champagne flowing, men dressed in Paul Smith suits and women dressed in fashionable hats, wearing Prada or Stella McCartney, but the same couldn't really be said of Cheltenham Festival. Forget bijou hats, floating chiffon and strappy sandals - earmuffs, padded anoraks like Barbour jackets, and sensible shoes are the required dress here. National Hunt is often seen as flat racing's poor relation and when it comes to the sartorial stakes, jump racing is indeed furlongs behind. However, the spectators at Cheltenham are more serious about the racing than the socialising.

The Cheltenham Festival commands high sums in prize money, second only to the Grand National. During the four-day festival, over £500 million is gambled, lost and won. Just imagine losing or winning that much money on one race! But if you do fancy a flutter, you don't have to risk such exorbitant amounts. In fact, having a bet on a race or two can be lots of fun if you're a novice. Although it's pretty offputting trying to bet for the first time as there's lots of terminology and jargon to wade through. Lots of websites allow you to place your bets online and they also have good explanations of how it all works, so if you want to have a go but aren't sure how, check out one of the many sites to learn more.

To the seasoned veterans of the gambling world, horse racing is a very serious business. It's not just about picking the horse with the funniest name or the the jockey with the nicest colour silks (although those would be my methods of choosing!). People who really know their stuff make sure they check track distances, how many races the horse has run in the season, the jockey's track record, what the turf is like and all sorts of other details to ensure they make a really informed decision about which horse will finish 'in the money'.

Over the four days of the festival, 26 races are run and an estimated 230,000 people go to watch and enjoy the highly-charged atmosphere of the event. On Thursday it is Ladies' Day, like at Royal Ascot, and on this day an award for 'The Outstanding Contribution made by a Lady to Jump Racing' is presented. It's the only day that dressing stylishly is a must because awards for Best Dressed Lady, Best Accessories and Best Hat are presented, so if you are attending the festival, you will be in very finely frocked company! Ladies' Day is a chance for the women in attendance to really dazzle with their stunning dresses, jewellery and extravagant hats. The highlight of the event is the Cheltenham Gold Cup, which is held on the Friday. This is the ultimate prize and all the jockeys and trainers covet being a Gold Cup winner. Of course, there are also plenty of entertainments off the track, including music, dining and trade stands.

Anyone can buy Cheltenham race tickets for the festival online or by telephone. You will have to choose which enclosure you wish to be in as there are several to choose from. The most expensive and exclusive is the Club, which will set you back over £100 to get in. However, it offers the best views and refreshments and you may even be sharing a spot with rich racehorse owners! The town of Cheltenham is a beautiful place with lots of lovely hotels for you to stay in should you decide to stay for the festival's duration. Of course, the most popular hotels and B&Bs get booked up almost a year in advance. The railway station at Cheltenham connects to cities all over the UK so it's easy enough to go to the races, even without a car. And if you can't make it to the festival you can still catch it on television. Best way to watch it is on a large screen plasma TV so you don't miss any of the action!

Jacko's back

Filed under: Hot Searches, March 2009

It's Monday and the internet has been buzzing with activity over the weekend. In case you didn't have the time to catch all the most popular stories, here's our breakdown of the hot searches for today.

Last week on Thursday, the superstar legend Michael Jackson made an announcement from London's O2 Arena. He stated his plans to perform a comeback tour at the O2 dome beginning on the 9th July. Hundreds of fans waited for over an hour to catch a glimpse of their hero, but his appearance lasted all of 4 minutes in which he looked frail and a shadow of his former self. This tour will be his first in 12 years and he plans to perform at least 10 shows, although William Hill is already taking bets on whether MJ will show up for his first gig.

On Friday the Euromillions jackpot was a mind-boggling £90million! That definitely got the country searching for tickets and results after the draw. You have to match 5 numbers as well as 2 lucky stars and out of the whole of Europe, just 2 people managed to do that, unfortunately neither of them were in the UK. However, 22 lucky people in the UK did win £198,425.40, which is not to be sniffed at!

The new Star Trek movie is to be released on the 8th May this year and you can view the trailer online now. The film is set in a time before the original series and features James T. Kirk and Spock as young cadets fresh out of Starfleet Academy. Simon Pegg, of Shaun of the Dead fame, will be appearing as Scotty. Why not prepare for the new film by watching the old ones again, or the original series in all its camp 60s glory?

Richard and Judy made the shocking announcement that they are going to split - on screen. Having left Channel 4, the couple have decided to end their 20-year on screen partnership. Richard will continue a solo career while Judy will stay home to write. However, they have suggested that they will make appearances in shows connected with their book club since Richard and Judy's Book Club is such a phenomenally successful enterprise which has got Britain reading.

Singer Chris Brown was charged with assault after his attack on girlfriend and Rihanna, singer of 'Umbrella' and 'Disturbia', which left her face bruised and swollen. The charges were filed a week after the couple were reported to be back together again, there were even rumours of their marriage! Should Brown be convicted he could face up to 4 years in prison. However, it is not certain whether Rihanna will testify against him.

Following the huge success of the micro-blogging web application Twitter, Facebook has announced its plans to become 'real-time' to step up to their rivals. Users will be able to leave brief news clippets about themselves and update their status as they are currently able to but instead of receiving these updates from friends every 10 or 15 minutes, it will now be continuous. The Facebook homepage will be redesigned and launched on March 11th.

Have you seen the world's ugliest cat? He is completely bald except for his furry chest and has been named Ugly Bat Boy. He lives in a veterinary clinic in America where his infamous ugliness attracts regular visitors who reportedly find the poor kitty scary and mesmerising!

Got anything to say about today's hot searches? Maybe you're a Michael Jackson fan and you plan to see his concert or maybe you think the ugly cat is really quite cute - write a comment and let us know.

Going, going, gone!

Classic carI am addicted to online auctions. There, I said it. I'm not ashamed! There are so many bargains to be found online if you search for them, especially if you love vintage and retro gear. Someone else's junk might turn out to be your prized possession! Personally I love to search for vintage clothes - cowboy boots, leather jackets, funky bags, stylish dresses - you name it. Somewhere out there on the web, someone wants to sell the dress I've always wanted, and when I find it, that's when the exciting part begins.

Placing your first bid for that coveted item can be daunting but exciting too. You have to be sure of what your limits are and don't get sucked into a bidding war for something you can't afford - trust me, I'm speaking from experience! Once the auction is over, it's such a great feeling to find out that you've 'won'. Who doesn't like being a winner? Whether you're bidding on a retro toy such as a Star Wars X-Wing, Tracey Island from the Thunderbirds, or maybe you just have to get your hands on the original vinyl records of your favourite band, online auctions are a brilliant place to find your prize at a bargain price.

But it's not only small collectibles that you can snap up at auctions. You can also buy classic cars - fancy a 1960s Ford Mustang or a cherry red Volkswagon Beetle? There are some real beauties for sale in online auctions which have been lovingly cared for and maintained. And if you already own a classic car that needs some attention you can hunt down rare car parts easily.

Online auctions are an excellent place to go antiquing. My parents love filling their house with antique furniture and I'm sure they've exhausted all the antique shops in their neighbourhood! So guess who has to go online for them to look up Victorian dining tables and antique nesting tables, of course, while I'm searching for them, I also have a look for myself, but I prefer to search for retro, art deco posters.

If you're into computer games, like me, and you have a penchant for the 'old skool' games, you might have trouble finidng the games you used to play back in the day. Do you still have your Atari, Amstrad, Commodore or Spectrum? You can definitely find games for these consoles at online auctions both cassette tapes and *gasp* floppy disks! You could even buy the console itself and remind yourself of those halcyon days of youth. As well as vintage games, there are tonnes of more recent platforms catered for: Nintendo 64, Sony Dreamcast - the Wii and Playstation's older brothers. If you have the space in your home and a bit of money to spare, you could buy yourself a 1980s arcade table with Pac Man or Space Invaders.

If computer games aren't your preferred choice of retro entertainment, vintage books can be found on online auctions. In fact if you are hunting for a particular first edition or signed copy, it's a really good idea to search online. You can find old books that range in price and value from a few pence to hundreds of pounds. If you're really good at searching, you might find a rare book to add to your collection.

All this writing about vintage online bargains has got me itching to search the auctions myself ... oh, did I already tell you I'm addicted to them?

Superhero movies

Filed under: Shopping, Movies, March 2009

Spiderman Superhero movies have been very popular of late so we decided to take at look at who are the favourite superheroes.

Coming in at the top of the searches is everyone's favourite X Man, Wolverine, who also starred in his own spin off movie, X Men Origins: Wolverine. The film follows the character's violent past before he gained his adamantium-fused skeleton and joined up with Professor X and his team.

Next we have the Incredible Hulk, who recently enjoyed two incarnations, first as Eric Bana in 2003 (which was not too popular) and then as Edward Norton in 2008. The Hulk's popularity often centres around which other superheroes he could beat in a fight, thus inspiring the animated films Hulk vs Wolverine and Hulk vs Thor, which were released to DVD in January.

Batman has always been a popular superhero, especially since the production of The Dark Knight starring Christian Bale. The caped crusader has no superpowers but is a vigilante, mistrusted by the authorities. No doubt this is the reason for his perpetual appeal and why the rumour-mill is already churning about Batman 3.

Despite being neither a Marvel nor DC character, Hellboy is one of the hottest superhero searches. The second film starring Ron Perlman was released last year and is available on DVD. There is a third and possibly final film planned, but director Guillermo del Toro must first give priority to his commitments filming The Hobbit, along with director Peter Jackson of The Lord of The Rings fame.

Iron Man's popularity increased after the 2008 film starring Robert Downey Jr. Did you spot his cameo in the Incredible Hulk? This points to an upcoming Avengers film in 2011 where he will fight the Hulk. And there are already plenty of rumours concerning Iron Man 2, such as his enemy Black Widow may be played by Scarlett Johansson who recently featured in comic-based movie The Spirit.

Your friendly neighbourhood Spiderman is of course one of the most popular superheroes especially after the three box office smashing movies starring Tobey Maguire. A fourth installment of the web-slinging crime fighter is expected in 2011, but in the meantime, there's no harm in watching the first three films again!

Finally, a superheroine amongst the top searched comic characters: Wonder Woman. A super-strong member of the Amazon tribe, Wonder Woman, or Diana Prince, came to earth to fight evil and eventually teamed up with the Justice League, which included several other DC comic heroes. A Wonder Woman or Justice League live action film is anticipated but as yet, has not gone into production.

Superman was the first ever costumed superhero and by far one of the most popular. He has appeared in cartoons, television series and movies, the latest one Superman Returns was released in 2006. Currently Smallville, the TV series about young Clark Kent's life, is in its ninth season. Superman may return in a Justice League film, but another solo movie doesn't seem to be on the horizon.

Some superheroes are not as popular as others and this can be seen in the almost unanimous criticism of the movies based on them. Some of the superhero flops have been Catwoman, starring Halle Berry, Electra, starring Jennifer Garner and the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen which featured well-known characters such as the Invisible Man and Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde.

Comment of the Week

  • "Some of these were mildy scary but the scariest film I ever saw was called "Satan's triangle" and starred Doug McClure. It was on the box late one night in about 1975 and when it finished I was shakey. About 5 mins later the phone rang (it was one o'clock in the morning), on the other end was my brother-in-law, he had watched it too and was too scared to go to bed."
