What's your favourite scary movie?

With Halloween lurking just around the corner, ready to jump out and scare the wits out of you, what better way to get in the mood than to watch one of your favourite scary movies? Horror is a very popular genre with many dodgy B-movies and also some real gems littering the shelves of DVD stores. The brilliant ones are often so good that they have you hiding behind the sofa even during the 10th viewing. Here are some of the most searched horror movies.
Top searched horror movies:
  1. Psycho
  2. The Shining
  3. Aliens
  4. Night of the Living Dead
  5. Jaws
  6. The Exorcist
  7. Ringu
  8. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
  9. Don't Look Now
  10. Poltergeist
Psycho Alfred Hitchcock's tense thriller stars the unbalanced Norman Bates and his 'Mother'.

The Shining Jack Nicholson makes an exceptional performance as the caretaker of the empty Overlook Hotel where ghosts and cabin fever ensure that Jack is never a dull boy.

Aliens The second installment of Ridley Scott's sci-fi horror saga about one woman's continuing battle against a fearsome and brutal alien enemy is regarded by many as even better than the original movie.

Night of the Living Dead The 1968 zombie movie from director George A Romero is a horror classic and spawned the Living Dead sequels and remakes that are still hugely popular today.

Jaws The film that had us fearing to dangle our legs over the sofa's edge - let alone the water's edge, depicts the battle between Brody, Hooper and a monstrous man-eating shark .

The Exorcist The story of a young girl being possessed by the devil and subsequently exorcised terrified audiences during its theatrical release so much that at many cinemas, paramedics were called to treat people who had fainted or were in hysterics.

Ringu This recent Japanese movie features the horrifying Sadako, a vengeful spirit who kills anyone that watches a certain mysterious video. It's popularity caused it to be remade in America.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre This film was banned 3 times in the UK due to its almost unprecedented goriness and perhaps this has contributed to its popularity. There have since been several sequels and a remake.

Don't Look Now Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie star in this creepy film about a young couple who move to Venice after the tragic death of the little girl. After meeting a woman claiming to be a psychic, strange things start happening to them, including seeing their daughter running about the waterways of Venice.

Poltergeist This film is still nearly terrifying nearly 30 years on from its original release. The film is about a family terrorised by ghosts that steal their young daughter away to another dimension.

Traditional toys best-sellers for credit crunch Christmas

If you're already panicking about the latest hi-tech toy for your child's Christmas stocking, then worry no more. This year, with the credit crunch hitting seasonal sales, it is the traditional big-name brands that are reaping the rewards as parents return to the simpler and less expensive children's toys.

Top toy searches:
  1. Sylvanian Families furniture
  2. Helicopter Lego
  3. Brio toys
  4. Monopoly board games
  5. Collectible dolls
  6. Stuffed animal toys
  7. Large piece jigsaw puzzle
  8. Action Man car
  9. Calico Critters
  10. Buy My Little Pony
According to the Toy Retailers' Association, Lego, Monopoly, Sylvianian Families and the obligatory talking, moving fluffy animals are expected to be Christmas hits... and most cost £40 or less.

Every year the biggest retailers choose 72 popular products which are then whittled down to the 12 "Dream Toys" that are expected to be under every tree. And this year the average price of those 72 has fallen from £40.63 to £22.89. Many retailers are already cutting prices. Asda is selling more than 100 toys at half price, while Sainsbury's has knocked 50 per cent off their toy range – that amounts to a reduction of £12 million.

Marco Ilincic, head of Lego UK, told the Telegraph: "The majority of toys that have been chosen this year don't involve technology. They are simpler, more traditional toys and that has brought down the price."

And with parents searching for the trusted brands, many have updated some of their old classics. Lego has created a game that allows children to build their own 3D boards and characters, for a board game they'll never get bored of, while family favourite Monopoly have incorporated sky scrapers, property auctions and planning permission into their new 'City' version of the game.

Nick Austin, president of the Toy and Hobby Association which represents manufacturers, said: "Consumers will continue to spend money on toys this Christmas, but they want value. There are still elaborate, hi-tech toys for those that can afford them, but the public has gone back to tried and tested brands that they know kids will like and won't abandon by the end of Boxing Day."

Are you down with the kids? If you have some great ideas for reasonably priced toys for Christmas, share them here by leaving a comment and help make other parents' lives, if not quieter, as least a little easier this year.

GPs warn of winter vomiting bug outbreak

It's going to be a tough winter for GPs this year as official statistics show that cases of the winter vomiting bug, called norovirus, have been on the rise in recent weeks. A bulletin to the health service has warned that this usually signals the beginning of a national outbreak, and family doctors are urging those with minor illnesses to stay away.

  10. Cold and flu
Figures from NHS Direct revealed that the proportion of calls regarding vomiting symptoms have risen above four per cent of all calls.

The virus, which causes violent vomiting and diahorrea, is usually resolved within 48 hours, but it can prove fatal in the vulnerable elderly or very young.

And other data from over 3,000 GPs suggested gastroenteritis was also above the level of this time last year.

Teamed with the current swine flu vaccination programme, it looks like being a busy winter for doctors.

Dr Michelle Drage, chairman of the London-wide Local Medical Committees, told the Telegraph: "It does not look like being a good winter healthwise. The advice to people is manage minor but uncomfortable illness at home and don't rush to the doctor with the very first symptom. That will enable us to manage the people that are acutely unwell."

Professor Steve Field, chairman of the Royal College of General Practitioners, advised that good hygiene would help to combat both swine flu and norovirus.

"It is going to be very, very busy. The more we can do to keep patients out of the surgery and keep them at home, as well as preventing infection, the better.

"There will be areas that have both swine flu and norovirus at the same time. People need to be hypervigilent about hygiene.

"I would recommend that everyone carry an alcohol gel with them and get in the habit of using it regularly."

Throw the perfect Halloween party

Us Brits aren't all that fond of trick-or-treating and there are many safer and far more fun ways to celebrate Halloween, such as throwing a big, scary party because everyone can enjoy a party whether they like Halloween or not.

Top Halloween party searches:
  1. Halloween costume hire

  3. Makeup for Halloween
  4. Halloween wigs
  5. Buy pumpkin
  6. Halloween party supplies
  7. Halloween props
  8. Kids Halloween costumes
  9. Makeup blood
  10. Scary Halloween costumes
Here are some top Halloween party tips. Firstly, ensure that all your guests dress up. Halloween is just about the only time of year when you can really go crazy with your fancy dress and anyone who doesn't try is a bit of a party pooper. You could have a best costume competition as an incentive to get creative. Check out our gallery of top searched Halloween costumes for some inspiration.

Next set the mood for your party. This can be easy and cheap to achieve if you use some spooky lighting - candles, especially inside a carved out pumpkin, create the right atmosphere. You can use chalk on black sugar paper to draw tombstones, or you could draw a body outline on the floor for a murder scene effect. Toilet paper is great for creating a mummified look.

Tough measures for file-sharers

The government will get tough on those who persistently download illegal content from the net, Peter Mandelson has announced. The Business Secretary spoke at a government-sponsored debate on copyright issues to say that illegal file-sharing will not be tolerated with persistent offenders facing disconnection from the network. Regular illegal downloader's would be sent two warning letters, with disconnection a "last resort".

"I have no expectation of mass suspensions. People will receive two notifications and if it reaches the point [of cutting them off] they will have the opportunity to appeal," Mr Mandelson said. "The pay-off for tough penalties against persistent file-sharers would be a more relaxed copyright regime," he added.

Mr Mandelson praised the UK's creative industries, but said that it had "been eroded in recent year by new ways of accessing content ... I was shocked to learn that only one in 20 music tracks in the UK is downloaded legally. We cannot sit back and do nothing."

He emphasised, though, that "legislation and enforcement can only ever be part of the solution," with new and cheaper ways to download the long-term answer.

The French government have already approved a 'three strikes' policy which could see users removed from the network for up to a year. But UK internet service providers argued that they are not responsible for policing the network.

Jean-Bernard Levy, chief executive of Vivendi, a French content and internet service provider, also spoke at the forum to say: "At Vivendi, we are in the content business, we are in the telecom business and there is no internal debate. The priority is not to grow traffic on the ISPs. The priority is that creators, people who develop content, should find a way [to be rewarded]."

Let us know what you think. Is disconnection from the network too harsh, or is it only fair that content providers receive recompense?

Credit card companies must 'get their act together'

The Government has told credit card companies that they must "get their act together" and has brought forward plans to prevent consumers being lumbered with unsustainable debts. A consultation document has been launched on changes to industry practices and aims ultimately to secure a better deal for borrowers.

Top credit card searches:
  1. Credit card issuer
  2. Raise credit limit
  3. Interest rates forecast
  4. Credit card payment calculators
  5. Eliminate credit card debt
  6. Managing finance
  7. Store card
  8. Monthly interest calculator
  9. Credit card rights
  10. Credit card debt elimination
Currently credit and store cards often make customers pay off the cheapest debt first, while expensive borrowing, such as cash withdrawn on a credit card, is left until last. The Government will consider rules that would change that so that the most expensive debt is the first to be paid off, as well as raising minimum monthly repayments so that customers are not saddled with decades of debt.

Kevin Brennan, the Consumer Minister, said: "Card companies have to get their act together and do more for consumers. My opinion is clear, the current relationship between card companies and consumers cannot go unchallenged. We need to put the customer back in the driving seat."

Unexplained rises in interest rates and increasing credit limits without customer consent are also under consideration.

Mr Brennan added: "It is not acceptable for card companies to impose complex and confusing terms and conditions that can leave people baffled, or to increase interest rates without a proper explanation. Consumers have a real responsibility to manage their finances properly, but they also have a right to clear information to enable them to do that. Consumers should not feel each month as if they've been exploited or disadvantaged."

Fiona Hoyle, head of consumer finance at the Finance and Leasing Association, insisted: "We will be working closely with the Government on the practical implications of their proposals to ensure a fair deal for all."

The consultation will run until January 19.

Wii Fit endorsed by NHS

Not so long ago the idea that a computer game might be endorsed by the NHS would have seemed preposterous. But such is the success of the Nintendo Wii Fit in getting gamers up off the sofa and into an exercise regime that the latest version, which goes on sale this Friday, will be using the NHS's Change4Life logo amidst its advertising.

  9. Fitness training programmes
  10. Health and fitness
A spokesman for the Department of Health told the Telegraph: "Active video games, where kids need to jump up and down or dance about as part of the game, are a great way to get kids moving."

The new version of the game, Wii Fit Plus, features all the favourites from the old game, including everything from hula-hooping to yoga, but will enable players to tailor their exercise programme to target specific areas of the body.

Rob Saunders, the British spokesman for Nintendo, said: "If you are worried about your bingo wings or your flabby bum, the game will give you specific exercises to target those areas.

The Nintendo Wii console has already been used by Seacroft Hospital in Leeds to encourage recuperating patients to exercise, but now, as part of the Change4Life campaign which aims to encourage people take more exercise and eat healthily, the Wii will bring new customers to the world of gaming.

Guy Cocker, of Gamespot, added: "It's a great victory for the computer games industry. And to give credit to Nintendo, I think most people who buy Wii Fit do so because they actually want to improve their health."

As of next year, it is even possible that the Change4Life logo will appear on the product itself, a first in terms of a partnership between the Government and the computer games industry.

Rip-off Britain

The expression 'rip-off Britain' was first created in the late 1990s but the concept is still relevant today as we Brits continue to pay over the odds for all sorts of products such as clothes, fuel, food, electronics, medicine and more.

Top Rip-off Britain searches:

  1. Fuel duty
  2. Rip-off Britain
  3. Food price compare
  4. Paying too much
  5. Organic food prices
  6. Stealth tax
  7. Premium call rate
  8. Low petrol prices
  9. Price of groceries
  10. Grocery discounts

In America they get the same products as us, the same labels, which are often manufactured in the same places, for considerably less than we pay. Here are 5 such products you can get cheaper in the States:

  • The Apple Macbook - American citizens can purchase a brand new Apple Macbook (13" screen, 2GB RAM, 160GB hard drive) for $999 which is currently about £630. Whereas us poor mugs in Blighty have to fork out £749 for the exact same machine. At least the delivery is free.
  • Petrol - In some States in America you can buy a gallon of petrol (or gas as they call it) for around $2.57 which is about £1.60. Currently the average price of a litre (yes, that's about a third of the amount) of petrol in the UK is £1.05.
  • Cars - Want to buy a gas guzzler to fill up with all that expensive petrol? Maybe a cute little Toyota Yaris. It's a Japanese car, but in the States it'll set you back around $11,185, which is about £7,800. The same car in the UK can cost between £9,905 and £14,935. Of course, you can take advantage of the scrappage scheme to save £2,000 but you need an old banger you've had for 10 years for the deal.
  • Levi's jeans - A pair of men's 501 Original Levi's jeans cost around $59.50 in America which is roughly £37 and for a similar pair from the UK website the cheapest option is £59.95. If you're a fan of Levi's it might work out cheaper to go on a shopping holiday to the USA and bring back some pairs for your friends and family.
  • Pizza - If you're in America (specifically New York for this experiment) and you're hungry you can order a large thin crust pepperoni pizza to collect from good old Pizza Hut for $16.99, which is about £10.70. The same pizza from a UK Pizza Hut costs £12.99. Maybe you should go to McDonald's instead where an American Big Mac costs $3.57 (£2.25) and a UK one is just £2.29 and be thankful you don't live in Norway where a humble Big Mac costs a whopping 40 Kroner - £4.48.
Are you tired of paying rip-off Britain prices or do you think it's a fair deal for our generally higher wages? Do you have shopping holidays to take advantage of cheaper goods abroad? Leave a comment and share your thoughts.

Ofcom clamp down on silent calls

They're the bane of many an evening in, but today the government has unveiled new plans to clamp down on the companies that plague customers with silent calls.

Top call centre searches:
  1. Stop cold calling
  2. Stop nuisance phone calls
  3. Call centres
  4. Call centre agents
  5. Ofcom
  6. Ex directory phone numbers
  7. Telephone call screening
  8. Call display
  9. Nuisance phone calls
  10. Call blocking
The calls occur when call centres using automated machine systems generate more calls than the agents are able to deal with. All too often the customer is never connected to a call centre agent and is instead greeted only by silence.

Communications regulator, Ofcom, receives around 400 complaints a month and carried out research earlier this year that revealed 49% of adults were "very inconvenienced" by silent calls.

Over 35% of over-65s, for whom silent calls can be worrying, said they had received such calls.

Currently, companies that persist in making silent calls can be fined up to £50,000 but the government's proposal means that the fine could be increased to a maximum of £2m.

Treasury minister Stephen Timms, who is implementing the Digital Britain plan, said: "Silent calls can cause a great deal of annoyance and distress, particularly to the elderly and vulnerable when their phone rings but no one is on the end of the line.

"Often the caller's number is withheld so the individual who has been dialled has no idea who is calling them.

"We want to send a clear message to those companies that are persistently abusing these automated calling systems that this will not be tolerated and there is a price to pay."

Discover your signature scent

There are literally hundreds of perfumes to be found in the shops and try as you might when going to the perfume counter to find a perfume that suits you best, sniffing each scent until your nose is numb, it's near enough impossible to do. Here are a few tips to help you find your signature scent.

Top perfume searches:
  1. Make your own perfume
  2. Buy perfume online
  3. Signature perfume
  4. Guerlain perfume
  5. Signature scent
  6. Davidoff perfume
  7. Buy cheap perfume
  8. Obsession perfume
  9. Perfume websites
  10. Dolce and Gabbana perfume
If you don't mind spending a bit of money, you can get expert perfume consultations to create a perfume that is tailored to you. This can cost anywhere from £40 upwards. Companies such as Guerlain offer this service, but if you prefer not to spend any money, you can check out their website for a simple online fragrance consultation.

When finding a perfume for yourself, bear in mind these tips. Test the scent by spraying it on your pulse points - behind the ears, at the throat, the nape of the neck, collar, wrists, the crook of your elbow, behind the knees and the ankles. Although some of those points might be more difficult to spray testers on in a shop than others.

There are different types of scents such as floral, fresh, spicy and warm, woody and earthy. These different types of scent appeal to different people so get to know which ones you prefer. Also bear in mind that there are different strengths of perfume available. Perfume (or parfum) is the strongest fragrance and the scent should last for about 6-8 hours, then eau de parfum which lasts between 5-7 hours, next is eau de toilette which lasts about 4-6 hours and the weakest scent is eau de cologne (aftershave) which lasts about 2-3 hours.

Remember to only test 3 or 4 scents at a time otherwise the smells will become confused and you won't know the difference between them. Also, perfumes smell differently on different people so don't buy a perfume because it smells good on someone else.

Jade's battle 'boosts screening'

Think of reality TV and the chances are that Jade Goody's name will readily enter your mind. But aside from rising to fame and fortune from the humble beginnings of Big Brother, her "lasting legacy" has come from her well-publicised battle against cervical cancer.

  10. Cancer research website

The 27-year-old died earlier this year having been diagnosed in 2008 and new figures show that the number of women aged between 25 and 64 being screened rose by 12% last year.

As the first increase since 2002, both the government and charities say that her tragic death from the disease is more than likely the cause of the rising numbers.

The NHS Information Centre showed that screening rose from 3.2m to 3.6m in 2008-9 and the increase was most prominent among younger age groups.

Professor Jane Maher, chief medical officer at Macmillan Cancer Support, said: "We are pleased that more young women are having the smear test and hope this rise continues, as screening undoubtedly saves lives.

"When spotted early, abnormalities can usually be treated successfully by a smear test and that is why it is also essential that women attend follow up appointments for further tests.

"Jade Goody really did leave a lasting legacy. She was open and honest about having cancer and as a result, so many more young women are now looking at their own health and are motivated into taking action."

Sarah Hiom, director of health information at Cancer Research UK, agreed, adding: "Media coverage of Jade Goody's tragic plight brought important cervical cancer awareness messages into living rooms across the UK and the huge increase in people seeking information about cervical screening following Jade's diagnosis became known as the 'Jade effect'.

"It is gratifying to see that the result of her story that was played out so painfully in public has resulted in so many more women attending cervical screening."

She may have caused controversy during her lifetime, but her tragic passing has meant that thousands may be saved from the same fate.

  • "Some of these were mildy scary but the scariest film I ever saw was called "Satan's triangle" and starred Doug McClure. It was on the box late one night in about 1975 and when it finished I was shakey. About 5 mins later the phone rang (it was one o'clock in the morning), on the other end was my brother-in-law, he had watched it too and was too scared to go to bed."
