Horse of the Year show

Showjumping, dressage, spectacular displays and more horses than you can shake a stick at - you can find all of this and more at the Horse of the Year show, which starts today. The extravaganza marks the end of the equestrian season - it is a champion of champions show lasting for 5 days. If you are fan of the GGs and didn't know the show was on, you can still buy tickets now by going to the Horse of the Year Show's website.

The schedules over the 5 days will include showjumping and then showing for different breeds and types of horses such as New Forest and Welsh ponies, hunters, cobs, mares and stallions. One show not to be missed today is the miniatures where you can see tiny little horses about the same size as large dogs!

Also every day you can see the Pony Club mounted games - these are great fun to watch as incredibly talented under-15s show off their horsemanship by leaning off their ponies to grab mugs from tables or having relay races with their team members. It's a kind of school sports day with ponies. You can also watch the Horse of the Year Show musical that is showing every day in which 16 riders will don basketball player and cheerleader costumes to celebrate the High School prom.

If you want to catch a slightly more adult show, Daniel Naprous and his team of stuntmen - the Devil's Horsemen - has an impressive highly choreographed display every evening from 8.30pm.

Horseriding is an expensive sport so it's good that shows like the Horse of Year Show share equestrainism with everyone. Have you plenty of horsey experience? Would you like to experience horseriding but feel that the sport is too expensive? Leave a comment and share your thoughts.

Olympic announcement

The Olympic announcement will be made today revealing the decision of where to host the 2016 Olympic Games. Seven cities had made bids to become the hosts of the games, these were Chicago, Tokyo, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro, Baku, Doha and Prague. However, the latter three cities did not make it to the final shortlist.

While Tokyo and Madrid, as well known capital cities, are strong candidates for the Olympics, previous games will have only recently been held in Asia and Europe and this may scupper their chances. If Rio de Janeiro's bid wins, they will be the first ever South American city to host the games.

Choosing the host for the Olympic Games is a very long process. For these 2016 games, the process started in September 2007. The applicant cities have to submit lengthy questionnaires - twice - and a long voting process then begins. And today, two years later, we will learn in which city the 2016 Olympic Games will be held. Will you be travelling to that city to watch the events? Which is your favourite Olympic event? Cycling Tour of Britain

Most people know about the Tour de France cycle race as it's a hugely puclicised event with lots of coverage, but perhaps fewer people are familiar with the Tour of Britain. This staged cycle event takes place throughout Britain and currently lasts 8 days (although in the past it has been shorter). This year the event starts off on the 12th September in Scunthorpe, then heads north to Darlington, the Scottish Borders and into Scotland, then Lancashire, Staffordshire, Somerset, Devon and a final stage in London. If you want to search for more information about cycling, use our top searches as a guide.

Some of the top cyclists will be taking part in the race including Andy Schleck, who came second at the Tour de France, Mark Cavendish, the British cyclist who has won 10 stages in total at the Tour de France and Bradley Wiggins, another Brit who came fourth in this year's Tour de France and has won many Olympic medals.

It's only recently that there has been regular coverage of the Tour of Britain on television. Previously it seems that there was not enough interest in the event to spare the resources. It seems strange that a cycling race in France should enjoy more popularity than an event which takes place here in the UK. Although, perhaps with the stages taking place on our doorsteps, we can go and see the action taking place live rather than tuning in on our tellies! If you are interested and want to follow the race on TV, you can catch hour-long nightly highlights on ITV4 between 7-8pm. There are also repeats the following day so you won't miss any of the action!

Are you a cycling fan? Do you wish there were more coverage of local events? Leave a comment and share your thoughts.

But unlike past qualifiers, the English team are firmly in the driving seat:

How can this be?

In the past English World Cup qualifiers were laced with booby traps, minnow nations trying to make a name and big hitters looking for a famous English scalp.

We've had some hair-raising moments, where every English match had you reaching for the Paracetamol and praying for a win.

Who can remember Beckham's last gasp equaliser against the Greeks or the 5-1 annihilation of Germany in 2001? Or older still, losing out from qualifying against the Poles?

It's that time of year when every football fan waits with bated breath and the question on everyone's lips is, "Who will win the Premier League?" Will cash rich City break the 'Big Four's' hegemony or will they be a damp squib in a sea of predictability? Here's the Hot Searches guide to the Premier League.

The 'Big Four':

Liverpool – despite a glorious history they haven't won a title since Premier League's inception. Can Rafa's boys reach the premiership summit or will it be another year of disappointment? With one acquisition to their name, will this be enough?

Chelsea – they've got a couple of solid signings and a spine stronger than the Eiffel Tower. With the powerful Drogba back to his best and the force of nature that is Michael Essien, can they triumph this year?

Man United – now that the winker has gone, can Rooney fill his boots? Can Michael Owen get a pair to fit him? With Hargreaves soon to come back in the holding role, will it be a record-breaking 4th consecutive title?

Arsenal - Adebayor's gone, Nasri is out for 3 months but Rosicky's back! Will the Gunners have enough firepower to take them to the top or will the only spectacle at the Emirates we'll be watching be Bendtner's pink boots?

Dark Horses:

Man City – they've been hitting the back pages, spending big, matched only by Real Madrid. Can Mark Hughes's men make it a fairy tale or is it just another false dawn for the luckless City fans?

Spurs – with the acquisition of Peter Crouch, 'Arry' and his boys look the part but every season, like a suit from Mr Byrite's, they fall apart at the seams. Can they break the Big Four's stranglehold or will it be another false dawn?

So what do you think: who will win the Premier League this season? Leave your comment here.

Putting cricket to the test

Perhaps, like much of the world, you don't know what all the fuss is about. Or perhaps you wonder why there is not more fuss about the most ephemeral sporting fixture of them all - the Ashes series.

If your first experience of cricket has been the recentTwenty20 cup, where the focus is firmly on after-work socialising with friends in the sun, with the occasional glance towards some vaguely identifiable figures toiling away on the picturesque backdrop of the lush green pitch, then the prospect of watching a game that will last for a total of 25 days over the next 2 months must make you wonder just how many Mexican waves it can stay interesting for.

But plenty of people do still find this anachronistic idea interesting. A contest that in most years follows the same pattern as its origins in 1882, with Australia inflicting an ignominious defeat on the England team at the Oval, it captured big headlines in the summer of 2005, when 'Ashes fever' gripped the nation, and became such a preoccupation for your correspondent that she not only took the day off to bite her nails watching Kevin Pietersen save the day, but also agreed to an ill-advised tour of the rather less successful series in Australia in 2006.

Still, one suntanned Aussie was so pleased about their historic win at Adelaide on 5th December that yours truly managed to flog him a worthless ticket stub for a tenner after the match!

You can see why it became a national obsession: after all, what other sport is played exclusively when the weather's nice, gives you all day to enjoy some Pimms or the Sunday papers, is covered for 8 hours a day of mildly amusing radio banter on Test Match Special, and can still be decided right up to the last ball.

So why not follow in the footsteps of famous fans like Mick Jagger and (apparently) the delectable Hugh Jackman. Tune into the radio, dress up in silly costumes and catch a game if you're lucky enough to have tickets, or follow the action online at Asylum's live blog.

The first test is under way in Cardiff, so watch this space. Are you a cricket fan or are you mystified by anyone's interest in the game? Leave a comment here and share your thoughts.

British Grand Prix

The British Grand Prix is held at Silverstone racetrack. Along with the Italian circuit, it's the oldest continuously staged Formula One World Championship Grands Prix. While not being as glamorous and exotic as some of the the other Grand Prix locations, the beauty of the British Grand Prix is that it's right on your doorstep! Instead of watching the F1 cars speeding by on your TV screen, you can witness for yourself Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton gunning around the track at top speeds.

If you haven't got tickets for this year's British GP, there are still some available through ticket agents and classified adverts. And if you're a Formula One fan you should really try your best to make it because this year will be the last time the event is hosted at Silverstone. On account of disputes between the owners of Silverstone and the Formula One authorities, the British Grand Prix will be moving as of next year.

Donington Park won the contract to host the event from 2010 onwards. However, legal issues have arisen meaning that there are doubts as to whether Donington will be able to host the race. If this turns out to be the case, there will be no British Grand Prix next year at all! Would you be sorry to see Britain left out of the Grand Prix circuit? Leave a comment and share your thoughts.

The biggest, most famous and most fashionable event of the racing calendar is Royal Ascot. Out of all the other racing events, Ascot has the strictest dress code. In the Royal Enclosure men have to wear full morning dress including a top hat and women must cover their midriffs and shoulders and must also wear hats. Elsewhere at the event such formal attire is not essential but most people attend wearing their smartest clothes.

On Ladies' Day, women give a free rein to their millenery creativity and wear incredible, spectacular hats. Feathers, flowers, lace and bright colours can be seen everywhere - some hats are beautiful and some bizarre, but you can be sure they are all expensive. Check out some of the absurd and amazing creations here on Ruby Room.

Also on Ladies' Day, the Ascot Gold Cup race takes place which is the main event of the five-day festival. Prize money for the race is about a quarter of a million pounds and across the whole of Ascot, the prize money on offer is over £3million - the largest amount of all European race events.

Members of the royal family regularly attend the races, so if you visit, you may well catch a glimpse of the Queen. If you want to get into the Royal Enclosure, you'll have to be either an Ascot member or a friend of one. Otherwise you can purchase a hospitality package, but that would set you back a few hundred pounds. But even if you can't get in to rub shoulders with Royals, you can still wear formal gear and top it off with an outrageous hat.

Are you fascinated by Royal Ascot fashion or do you find the hats utterly ridiculous? Leave a comment and tell us what you think.

Today is the first day of the Royal Ascot race meeting. It lasts five days and is the most prestigious and posh of all the racing events in Britain. It's the racing equivalent of the World Cup and over 300,000 people attend every year almost as much to see the fantastic fashions and the rich and famous as to witness the races.

Tickets are still available if you want to go yourself, but be warned that most people dress formally, even if they are not entering the Royal Enclosure where a strict dress code is enforced. If you do decide to attend, be careful when having a flutter!

Racing at Ascot can be a fun day out: there are lots of lovely restaurants to eat at, or you can bring a picnic, you can enjoy the thrills and excitement of the racetrack, see members of the royal family or even the Queen and you might even win a few bob if you back the right horse!

It's just two days until the battle of the blues between Chelsea and Everton at the 2009 FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium. Both teams have had good wins in the past - Chelsea four times and Everton five - but which team will lift the cup this Saturday?

The FA Cup is the oldest football competition in the world - it was founded in 1872 - and it is a competition full of hope for the small clubs who get the opportunity to go up against big Premiership teams since the competing pairs are drawn randomly, although the small clubs rarely get into the further stages of the knockout tournament. In fact, there have only been 8 small clubs in the history of the FA Cup who have gone on to win the competition.

Being the biggest match in British football, the FA Cup Final commands steep prices for tickets. Some fans can pay up to £1600 if they missed the original ticket sales and have to resort to agents. That just goes to show the passion of the fans surrounding this tournament. Will you be heading to Wembley this weekend or watching the match on TV?

The sixth race of the Grand Prix takes place this Sunday at the exotic location of Monte Carlo in the principality of Monaco. This particular circuit is the most famous of all and is considered the 'jewel of the Formula 1 crown' on account of the glamour, opulence and excitement of the location. Monaco has a great number of foreign millionaires and billionaires residing there in the lap of luxury because of the tax breaks the country allows them. If you are lucky enough to go there for the Grand Prix, not only will you see Formula 1 drivers and their fantastic cars, but also you will see huge, expensive yachts, luxurious hotels full of the rich and famous and, of course, the famous Monte Carlo casinos.

The race takes place through the streets of Monte Carlo and La Condamine. The track consists of narrow streets lined with crash barriers; it has a limited view, tight corners and requires a great amount of skill from the drivers, so to win it is very prestigious. Veteran driver Ayrton Senna won the Monaco Grand Prix an impressive six times - five of those in consecutive years.

Last year, Lewis Hamilton's win at Monaco bumped him up from third to first place in the standings. This year, he is currently joint seventh place, with Jenson Button steaming ahead in first place with 41 points. Will Hamilton be able to repeat his success of last year? What do you think? Women's football - hot or not?

The FA Women's Cup Final, which took place at Pride Park, Derby County FC in May, culminated in victory for Arsenal against Sunderland. It was their fourth consecutive win. The FA Women's Cup was founded back in 1972, but it's only since 1993, when the Women's Premier League was created, that the number of players around the country has increased. Since then, the number of female footballers has increased from 10,400 to around 150,000. The sport is rapidly gaining popularity around the world with some 4.1million women playing affiliated football.

So it's clear that women are interested in playing football, but why is there so little interest in watching the sport? The first clue to its lack of followers is that the final is taking place in Derby, whereas the men's equivalent usually takes place in Wembley Stadium. The tickets for the women's match are a mere £5, but if you want to see the men's FA Cup Final, you might find yourself paying up to £1,000. The women's game, like the men's, has sponsorship, but female footballers are not able to become full-time professionals commanding 6-figure salaries - most have to fit their team commitments around other jobs.

Maybe people do not really associate women with football - apart from as WAGs, which isn't helpful for female players. When I was at school, I wasn't allowed to play football - it was a boy's game and girls played netball. So maybe attitudes have yet to change. But these days as well as the many women's clubs and players, there are also female club owners (Delia Smith) and female commentators (Jacqui Oatley). Women like football and want to participate in the game, and as much as women's football has grown, there is still a long way for it to go.

ITV1 and Setanta Sports cover the matches but you won't see them on the BBC. Do you enjoy watching women's football or have you no time for it? Leave a comment and tell us what you think.

London Marathon

The Flora London Marathon is taking place this Sunday and thousands of sweaty joggers will be making their way around the gruelling 26 miles 385 yards course around London. Both professional runners and amateurs who are raising money for charity take part and the time it takes to complete the course can vary between 2 and 6 hours.

Have you ever wondered if you have what it takes to be a marathon runner? It takes a lot of commitment and training. First off, if you can run 6 miles then you could probably train up in about 6 months but you'll have to find the time to train for between half an hour to an hour nearly every day of the week. And if you're a complete novice, you may need up to a year to prepare - don't believe what you've seen on 'Run, Fat Boy, Run'!

Apart from all the training you need to put in, you also have to buy various pieces of kit. Contrary to what you might think, you do need more than just yourself and a pair of trainers. The right kind of trainers is vitally important so that your feet are well cushioned and you don't injure yourself. You'll also need the right kind of clothes that 'wick' away sweat from your skin and prevent chafing (bleeding nipples is a nasty but real risk of the sport). Then you may need handheld GPS equipment for your long runs and a gym to train in when the weather's really bad.

There's actually quite a lot involved in running a marathon - you really have to respect all those people taking part this Sunday. But just imagine how good it would feel to cross the finish line! Would you be willing to give it a go or have you already completed one? Leave a comment and tell us about it.

  • "Some of these were mildy scary but the scariest film I ever saw was called "Satan's triangle" and starred Doug McClure. It was on the box late one night in about 1975 and when it finished I was shakey. About 5 mins later the phone rang (it was one o'clock in the morning), on the other end was my brother-in-law, he had watched it too and was too scared to go to bed."
