Amy Winehouse
The music world was shocked and saddened when Amy Winehouse was found dead at her Camden flat on 23 July – aged just 27. Despite having only released two albums, the troubled star was hugely influential and considered one of the most exciting female vocalists in the world. After much speculation, a coroner ruled that alcohol poisoning was the cause of her death.
Harry Potter 7
It was a film 10 years in the making - and marked the end of a movie era. London 2012 tickets
Tickets to the 2012 Olympics were in hot demand - and short supply - this year. In the men's 100m athletics final more than one million tickets were requested. Allocation of tickets turned out to be something of a lucky dip but those fortunate enough to attend one of the many events can look forward to being part of sporting history – and right on our very own doorstep.
Princess Beatrice's Hat
What was it? A curly-wurly? A satellite dish? Milliner Philip Treacy's creation for Princess Beatrice was only upstaged by Pippa Middleton's bottom in the Royal Wedding attention grabbing stakes. But all the publicity was put to good use with the hat selling for over £80k at auction, with all the proceeds going to charity.
A Look Back At 2011
From the Royal Wedding to the summer riots, the world's eyes were on Britain's streets this year. Tens of millions of people tuned in from around the world to watch Kate Middleton marry Prince William at Westminster Abbey on 29 April. Then just a few months later, shocking scenes of violence, arson and looting on British streets were broadcast around the globe. More than 1,000 people have now been charged over the riots.
This was also the year we were shocked by the News of the World phone hacking scandal, the untimely death of Amy Winehouse, the Eurozone crisis, and the tragic earthquakes in Christchurch New Zealand, Japan and most recently Turkey.
2011 also saw the deaths of two of the world's most wanted men: Osama Bin Laden and Gaddafi.
